Guys I am needing to confirm what type of chainset this is?
Currently on my bike it says its a SHimano M442 Chainset which was standard on my bike. It's pretty worn out now and needs replaced, so I was going to just change it over for the same one - which as far as I can tell is this one http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=46021. However this says it's square taper. When I took the hex nut off the front it doesn't look like a square taper, as I can see right through the BB??
Is this an Octalink or a square taper?? My understanding of square taper BB was this:
Attached are some photos of my current chainset. Can you help me and confirm or deny if the one from Chainreaction is the same as the one which is on my bike and if so, will be a like for like replacement?
Thanks for your help in advance!!

you need octalink."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Cheers!
So something like http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=46023 is going to be required.....?It's been a while...0 -
If your bikes a Rockhopper comp then your cranks are the octalink version and the square taper BB wont fit, the one your looking at is a FC-M442-L/S (sqr taper) and you have a FC-M442-8-L/S (octalink)

Looks like thats the exact replacement for my current one then!
Now it doesn't look like there is a difference between this one and the Alivio one...It's been a while...0 -

SHimano 8 speed cranks can be a bit finnicky with 9 speed chains. it may work - it may not ;-)0

If you get the Alivio Cranks you will need a new BB as well as the axle length needed are different.
M410 needs a 118mm axle for a 50mm chain line
while the
M422 needs a 126 axle for a 50mm chain line.
BigStu2
the question was what was the fitting.
anything else is buying advice really.
But as you guys have suggested a crankset that may cause problems."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Ok thanks again, I'm just looking at the specs of my bike on specialized.com's website and it says the BB which is a ES25 has 68mm x 118mm ? And I have the FCM442 Crankset, which going by my understanding of your above post, suggests that I wont have a 50mm chainline?
I guess my next question is, If I bought this: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/shimano/deore-m442-chainset-ec008618 would it be ok?
Thanks Guys!It's been a while...0 -
Would it be worth while getting a new BB as well?
I'm seeing it for £11.99 on CRC http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=34653 and 118mm is the width not 126mm like Nicklouse suggested above?
Sorry for bumping the post, I just need a little clarification before purchasing the correct pieces.

why not just get the deore extrernal bearing one... it should come with a bb. itl be a hell of a lot lighter too...I like bikes and stuff0

So are you suggesting I get one of these : http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=40496 and then just take the current BB straight out and fit the above? I take it the BB comes with the above item and short of the tools to install, that is all which would be required? It's been a while...0
