i am stripping my bike for a compete overhaul and need some advice.

1.the outer chainring of the chainset is pretty damaged and am looking to replace it with either a like for like or a completely different chain ring make?

2. it mentioned on the chainset that itt's only compatable with an IG chain, are there any alternatives outthere that will suit?

3.How am i able to get the crank arm off as it's a right pain to even move it??

any help, tips or advice will be of great help. :)

What cranks are they? And do you know the chainring sizes and BCD?

The chainset is Shimano STX 175mm and the outer chain ring is a 42T

You will need to replace with an 8 speed chainring (or 7 speed, they are essentially the same) of the same bolt holes and bolt circle diameter. Is it actually removable though? The chainset is compatible with all 5,6,7,and 8 speed chains.

You need a tool called a crank extractor to remove the whole chainset.

is the cranks an STX or an STX RC?

please provide a part number of the rear of the arm.

if they are the '95 STX RC and you need to change the middle ring as well you may have better luck finding Rocking horse-shit.

1995 STX RC has a single 58mm primary bolt circle, and a special middle chainring that carries the outer ring. (5 bolt)

1997 STX RC has a single 94mm primary bolt circle, and a special middle chainring that carries the inner ring. (5 bolt)

and the '98 is standard 4 bolt.

yep thats the one. is it possible to use other 5 bolt chainrings even if the tooth size is 44t or 39t??

number of teeth does not matter much.

you just need the right BCD.

that's great, so aslong as the BCD is an exact match then i can use a number of chain rings then.
