Steerer Tube Spacers

Not sure if this belongs in here but here goes!

I have seen some bikes that have spacers above the stem on the steerer tube, is this just to save having to cut the steerer tube? Or is this there some other reason?

    some people don't bother cutting down the steerer tube as they can play about with different stem heights and then when they have found a good position they cut the steerer down or leave it

    A mate has a big stack of spacers on his bike. During the week he uses the bike to commute and he puts all the spacers but one on top of the stem. It drops the bars and gets him a bit more aero. Friday night and 5 minutes with an allen key to raise the height and its all set up for offroad.

    If you work it like above, not cutting the steerer is also a strong selling point when you come to sell and upgrade a fork as well.

    or they have just decided to try the bars at a different height.
