9 speed chainset with 8 speed everything else?

The chainset is knackered on my old bike and I want to get it up and running with a new one, however I'm looking at a deore chainset which specifies 9 speed. Would it work with 8speed cassette/deraileur? Also I have a 9 speed and 8 speed chain, which would be best to use with the above combination?

    i am using deore set with 8 speed, need 8 speed chain too

    Is it a deore chainset which was designed for 9 speed?
