Avid Elixr R adjusted but rubbing

Basically my Avid Elixr R hydraulic rear brake is always on.
I re-tightened the retaining bolts with the lever depressed.
This didn't work so I used a flat screwdriver to try to wedge the pads apart.
This made the lever spongy and increased its travel. On one side of the rotor there is pad contact and on the other I doubt enough to put a sheet of paper through. :?
Any ideas?
update: busted lever. returned. luckily still under warranty.

Do the best you can and go for a short ride and pump the brakes! The should bed in and auto adjust.
make sure both pistons are operating correctly, and retracting.0 -
