Shoulder injury

I managed to land squarly on my shoulder when falling off my bike back in January (on ice). My shoulder does not still feel right - its uncomfortable at night and during the day I sometimes feel a numb sensation on the upperarm and hands, even though I have full rotation of the shoulder. I am now finding it diffiicult to lift heavier objects without the support of my other hand, paricularly at arms length. Before I go down the route of seeing a GP and getting reffered has anyone had any experience of this and what was the general advise given to remedy it.
