folks

looking for your advice

currently doing a 28 mile round trip commute to work on mtb with slicks, mixture of tarmac trail, light dirt trail and road

work is statring the cyle to work with cyclescheme

thinking of updating to a hybrid, lbs has recommended a ridgeback, with the flight series being the most expensive

http://www.irvinecycles.co.uk/acatalog/flight.html

not sure what model to go for??????? dont mind spending £600 ish

or any other recommendations you have would be appreciated

thanks

I ride in on a Ridgeback Flight T1, which they no longer make. I have been very pleased with it.

I was looking at the 01 or 02, as I couldn't justify the next jump in pricing just for what appears to be disk brakes.

However the 04 does have hub gears but it's still too much mony for a hybrind IMHO.

If you look at the wheel hubs, chainset, front and rear mechs then yes there is a bigger difference than between the 02 & 03.

Even then I thought them both expensive, so I bought a cyclocross instead.

Now just hunting for a frame to build a bike up using the hybrid components and possibly a new set of wheels.

for me 02 if money's no object and you want disks then 03 but then I'd be a little worried as the disks will make it stand out and be more attractive to the tealeafs.

its on the c2w scheme so ill prob go for the 02, only works out about £350
  • I had a Ridgeback (2003 Velocity) and it was a great bike. Well built and reliable. Enjoy

My commute roundtrip is 35-40miles roundtrip.

First c2w scheme the company I work for I chose a Ridgeback hybrid. At the time I was pleased with it but...

3 years later - next cyclescheme I chose a road bike which could take mud guards and a rack. If I had chosen a road bike the first time round I wouldn't have bothered with the scheme the 2nd time.
Its far less tiring to ride than the hybrid - lots more positions for your hands.

Ridgeback Flight will be a good bike but if I were you I would look at road bikes - quite like the look of the Ridgeback road bikes actually.

Could always fit drops to the Flight but then you could also get hold of the Ribble audax for less money with better components.

i fancy the idea of a road bike, but most of my commute is on a cycle path

A lot of my commute has a cycle path by the side, doesn't mean you have to use it !

Each to their own: nasty bumpy things in my experience, also have a tendency to have pedestrians on them

I have a road bike and I use bikepaths and tracks - basically go anywhere.
Where the tracks are really bad then you just go slower than if you are on a mtb but then you make up for that on the fast stretches.

is it really worth it spending £600 on a hybrid

would this be suffice for a 26 mile commute?
