Buying a bike around Ilford.. hmm...

Hi everyone c:
I'm planning to start commuting by bike to local places, starting about 0.5 - 2 miles, and hopefully if I get used to it enough, to school 8 miles away.
I'm super scared about all the jamm-y traffic around Romford Road/Ilford, but that's something I'll worry about later. First I gotta buy a new bike (umm...my old one has a gross metallic purple paint job with HIPPY! written across...).
I was wondering if you guys could offer me any advice? I got kinda excited and did about 2 full days research, but I still can't decide.
At first, I really wanted to go for a vintage-looking Dutch-esque bike, but now I'm thinking it won't be all that practical if I plan on going far in future. I started looking more at Hybrid/City bikes.
What do you think about this one? (Raleigh Urban 3 Ladies 2009) http://www.cyclesuk.com/137-248260
I don't have a clue about decent bike brands. I'm worried it might not be very reliable, and I'm willing to spend a bit more if it's worth it; so I looked at this one too: (TREK Allant WSD 2010) http://www.tritoncycles.co.uk/products. ... raditional
Do you think I'm better off paying more for better quality? Or will the Raleigh bicycle be enough for me to start of with?
And finally, if anyone lives around Ilford area, could you recommend any trusted bicycle shops?
Sorry for such a long post. I hope I haven't broken any kind of rules by posting this.
Thank you for your help.

Not sure about Ilford, but South woodford has a shope on George Lane (E18 1LW)which is good, Buckhurst Hill has Online Bikes (IG9 6DL) - there is also Heales in Highams Park (E4 9PT).
all of them would be good for advice.
Someone may be a long in a minute to give you more local advice.
This map may be of use as well to find a decent shop.

also when you have got your bike - come on here for route advice.
or try this:

They do cycle buddies to accompany you on your first journeys.
Local council will probably also do free cycle training.0 -
