That's what this guy seems to be, according to this report! Killed a cyclist - another human being - and apparently, didn't show remorse or anything!

David McCall was a local legend, a real loss to the cycling world in Northern Ireland. :(

A touching tribute to him here:

We're still talking about manslaughter here, not murder.
I'm pretty sure if such sentences were dished out a little bit more often it would have an impact on the way peoples drive around cyclists.

5 years!!!!! He should have got at least 10 years and been banned from driving for life. He was an accident waiting to happen to kill some one. Anyway a knee capping would have been much more appropriate ............
Life is like a roll of toilet paper; long and useful, but always ends at the wrong moment. Anon.
Think how stupid the average person is.......
half of them are even more stupid than you first thought.

Actually, I think given the lack of intent 5 years is probably about right. It's a properly stiff sentence and sends a pretty clear message

    i agree.

for the average person i.e. not hardened criminals....5 years in prison is a big sentence.
Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

“He has no relatives or family in Northern Ireland so his prison sentence will be all the more difficult because he will have limited contact with his family,”

    What a shame!

He should be banned from driving for life!

Isn't the easiest way to get away with killing someone to knock them off their bike!?

Its pretty disgusting really IMHO any road death should be treated as manslaughter and the appropriate penalties imposed. Whilst 5 years does seem like a scary sentance for a normal law abiding citizen (it would scare me silly!) 5 years locked in a box does not really tally imho wiht taking a life - regardless of how that life was extinguished and whether there was intent or not.

    A sad state of affairs.....

Number of times I've been in a group and we've had someone moron race to overtake and they've missed by <30cm....
'Twas Mulga Bill, from Eaglehawk, that caught the cycling craze....

Unfortunately it is. And it's like that in most cases. So the person walks out of prison straight into his/her car...
