.... and if it seems to be telling you to rest, don't ignore it.

I am now really rather broken. I have a trapped sciatic nerve, two slipped discs and am awaiting my second MRI scan, not to see whether to have surgery or not (because that is the only way I will not end up with some paralysis in my left foot), but how urgent it is.

The surgeon has ruled any cycling out until after the surgery, so that's 2010 done and dusted.

My bikes are going in the loft for now.

Really, really sorry to hear that Linz. A timely reminder for me to take better care of my aching joints, if I want to keep cycling/running for the longterm :(

Jeez. That's bad. Sorry to hear that.

Prolly best to get someone else to put the bikes in the loft, y'know, what with you having a bad back n'all.

ETA: what does "slipped" mean, exactly? Herniated? Bulging? Something else?

I am so sorry, Linsen! Back pain sucks big time. I slipped a disk in my lower back in February 2007, never experienced pain like that. Thanks to accupuncture and an excellent phisyotherapist I can stand up straight.

The spine specialist who MRI'd me said surgery not needed in this cases and referred me to above mentioned phisyo.

Hope you make a full recovery, try not to get too depressed and have faith that you will come out of this. Becuase you will.

That sounds terrible, I can only imagine it feels even worse. Lets hope for early surgery and a quick recovery, but no, you are not allowed wish for a rainy summer.

Linsen, I feel for you - I've had two lots of sciatica, once in 2002 and again last year and I still break out in cold sweats remembering the pain and blight on life in general.

I remember the medical advice was that I should not have it operated unless it was really serious so sounds like you have a bad case :( Ironically it was the back problem that got me into cycling again as it is relatively back friendly - so hopefully you will be back in the saddle once you're fully recovered.

    Best of luck.

One slipped disc is unfortunate, but two is simply careless.

In all seriousness, I do get the impression that cycling may not be the thing for you, per se. This level of difficulty, for a comparative spring chicken, is really not to be expected and if your back objects this much to cycling in a realtively short space of time... you may need a contingency sport. Cycling is my contingency sport, after rowing. Rowing was my contingency sport after running/squash.

After cycling, I suspect it will be kayaking.

After that, I'll get a dog and start walking. That should see me though until I don't care any more.

    Thank you all

The bizarre thing is that I am not actually in too much pain.

G66 - the actual problem is two completely degenerated bulging discs. No fluid left.

The damage was quite probably done many years ago, I blame horseriding, but cycling seems to aggravate it.

Frustrating? Yes, a little. But I shall be glad when it is sorted, and thinking positive (as well as being glad to have an excuse to stop rushing around so much and act like lady muck ;-))

Aw Linds, just what you wanted eh!

But yes, nothing wrong with a bit of R&R. Hope it's all straightforward, if frustrating!
