Yorkshire riders ‘Revive’ the Thurcroft CC Road Race

Whilst the loss of an early season road race is never ideal, the loss of the Thurcroft CC event after 18 years was even more relevant in 2010 as two fellow early season organisers moved back to later dates in the year, leaving a void in the calendar. Yorkshire Region has also seen an unprecedented demand for places in early races as organisers try to cope with 100+ riders for every event on the calendar.

At the inaugural meeting of the North Midlands Road Race Forum last month, Pete Sutton (BC Regional Events Officer for Yorkshire) reported good progress on new events in 2010 with 10 extra road and 16 extra circuit events already agreed with organisers but most were in the May-September period and the Region could ill afford to lose such a prestigious event so early on with rider demand at such levels.

This obviously sparked a seed in riders heads and with the Cycling Weekly article (March 4) attracting interest from as far away as Staffordshire (thanks Geoff & Simon at Kilo to Go!), this weeks Forum meeting saw local riders come forward to promote the event at short notice. With 40 days to go, the hope is that local riders will once again take to the roads of South Yorkshire on April 25th.

It will be however on the nearby Stainton circuit (for ease of marshalling numbers) and the race will carry on in 2011 with Andy Whitehead back at the helm. New organiser Marc Etches is confident that the event was possible still in the short time involved and would plug the void left by the Thurcroft CC loss.

So look out for the ‘Revived’ Road Race back on the British Cycling website and show the volunteers involved what you think of their commitment…enter now!

Please note, we have changed the circuit from Edlington to Stainton. Still using the same HQ. Please spread the word as we only have less than a month to the entry closing date. Thanks Marc

  • Great to see a race coming back as opposed to dying off for once! Would have entered but racing at Wetwang the same day!
