A bugging question

Hi

The new bike arrived this morning and there is something bugging me. The bike came in a huge box, with the handlebars upside down (standard practice I assume to fit the bars into the box). I had to take the bars off and put them round the right way. Having done that I noticed that the where the stem fits onto the frame of the bike you can see the bar that runs into the bike (sorry dont know the right words for it) its steel looking. On pictures of the bike online its black to fit with the stem. Does anyone know if I have dropped a part or should I speak to the company that I bought it off?

Do you mean the steerer tube?

Which bike did you buy and can you link to the website with the specifications ad picture?

The steerer would normally be steel or aluminium. This is what the stem clamps onto.
You can't generally see it, as there should be spacers around it, either above or below the stem according to the handlebar height you want. The spacers are usually black. Look for a set of rings/short tubes about 1.125 inches in inside diameter.

I guess that your stem clamp is cut away as part of its design, revealing part of the steerer tube. If so, then the bike in the picture had a carbon fibre steerer tube, and yours has an aluminium one. All this assumes that you've assembled it correctly.

Thanks for the reply. Here is the bike I bought. You will see what the stem is attached to is Black whilst mine is steel coloured.
  • don't know the answer, but what a gorgeous bike!

  • the steerer tube wont be painted black, sounds like you havent fitted the spacers which will be black and fit onto the steerer tube before the stem

Are your forks the same model as in that picture. I would say that the pic has a carbon steerer and yours probably an alloy one which you can see in the stem cut away.
