Hi All,
Planning a trip to Whistler and just needed some advice on Travel insurance. Anyone any recommendations? I have been told to stay away from Dog Tag.

2 week holiday bike park 1 week road trip and heli biking next week. With your usual holiday entertainment inbetween.

Cheers in Advance

I used these guys for my trip to Les Gets (£50 for 2 weeks) last summer without problems - didn't make a claim though but heard they're really good. As you would expect from a travel insurance company specialising in extreme sports holidays.

I don't know why you'd want to stay away from DogTag.

I've used them twice, the actual tag they give you is a bit of a gimick, but I'm diabetic so I added it to the system and I guess if I went down alone and turned up in Le Hospital out cold they could have found that out.

As it turns out I slammed a week before at Afan and couldn't go. They gave me the value of my flight, transfers and accom in 10 days or so and it was pretty easy.

The only slight fly in the ointment - The claim forms had "must be completed by GP" written at the top, well I was in Hospital for 3 weeks and my GP knew nothing about it so I ask my consultant to sign it and they wrote back saying it wasn't acceptable!

Phoned them up and they agreed it was stupid and sent payment straight away.

All-in-all 9/10. IMHO they're very good at covering your medical costs for all most any level of stupidly dangerous hobby, but they're not great on personal belongings, if you want your bike covered against loss / theft - look elsewhere.

i'm or we are going on our 5th trip to whistler this year (may) we always use insureandgo... just ring them up and tell them were you going and what you will be doing ect..
they paid up straight away 6 years ago when my bro poped his sholder in mammoth snowboarding,..
we always use them have done for years....
  • We've had guests have very good experiences with both DogTag and Snowcard/activcard. They are both usually good as they are intended for sports like MTB. That said....plenty of people have had good experiences with other insurers. Main thing to cehck is that mountain biking is covered - just 'cycling' may not be enough. Call the provider and check they will cover the kind of riding you do and that they will cover heli rescue etc etc. Most packages with proper extreme sports cover should do it.

Book your insurance as soon as you book your holiday. That way you're covered if you have to cancel - ie. fall off a bike and break something a week before going - again check the policy covers this!

May be worth getting your bike insured separately - through experience (again of our guests!) some home insurance packages can be better than travel ones.

Enjoy the trip and hope you end up not needing to discover how good the insurance company is!
  • I have always used www.sportscoverdirect.com as they have good coverage for downhill mountain biking, and although I have never had to make a claim (touch wood :) ) I have met several people who have and I hear they have been very speedy in dealing with claims.
  • i use this http://www.medibank.com.au/travel-insurance/ they are actually easy to contact wherever i am, especially when i suffered from a knee injury when i was biking at vietnam.
