How many of you have a winter bike?

If budget allowed I would have a second bike to keep my cervelo nice but budget wont allow.

Its much easier on the budget to replace a chain, cassette and cables in the spring and you have the pleaseure of a nice bike all year. Maybe a cheaper set of wheels / tyres but ive given up on the winter bike, it costs to maintain them unless winter bike means grotty pile of unloved cack.
  • this is my winter bike - stock fuji track (retails about £350) - added breaks & levers - bottle cage with pump / tube / tools stuffed in it

perfect for bashing around on roads with grit, mud & oomska through the winter -

This is mine. A mid 90s Peugeot frame with 10sp Campag Veloce. I wouldn't have gone so far, but in summer my dad borrows it. It's really heavy so I'm looking for an alluminium frame for next winter.

Having ridden all of last winter on a shiny new Cervelo S1 I managed to sort the funds for a turbo and a winter bike this year so the cervelo is in the living room in race setup and £80s worth of 1994 Dawes Galaxy (Reynolds 531 frame & Shimano 105) is taking me out for 4-6 hours a weekdend. It's great, less cleaning and fettling than the cervelo, strong wheels (36 spokes, 105 hubs, mavic rims) and means I can turbo too.

Hey Red, don't diss the Ribble! ( this is odd I know ) ... but ... I would rather have my Ribble ( tiagra build...damn the expense) than Hoppers beauty.

I just couldn't put a lovely shiny V.N/6700 through the worst of our salty sh1te. I'd feel bad, plus I'd have to fastidiously clean it after every ride. I know the frame will never ever rot but it's TOO nice.

Anyway Ribbles deserved to be punished, for everyone who didn't get their bikes on time/phone calls returned(ahem). It's cleaned very occasionally, has paint missing where it's been in/out of turbo & it never complaints.

Anyhow I've got a spangly Addict R1 tucked away & the Ribble makes that feel better than it probably is.

that Caad 9 is probably one of the best frames out there at a price thats affordable, i dont know what groupset / wheels youve stuck on there but the frame will last perfectly well with a wash every now and again. If youve got it ride it and enjoy it

My winter bike is a Scott Speedster S50 with Sora, Shimano RS 10 wheels and lights. It was my first road bike, but it was re-assigned when I got my Litespeed.

Front mech on my winter bike threw a fit this afternoon - luckily I was a only a mile from home so with the roads being "sans crud", I turned round and went out on the Felt.

Really need to fix the mech tomorrow morning - it seems totally seized (?) half way between the 34 and 50... No idea how, it's maintained and we haven't had any freezing nights lately. Anyway it's had a drop of WD40 to see if that helps!

PS. in case they read these forums; thanks to the fellow roadies who offered to help on Moor Lane just outside Darrington. We're a friendly bunch us roadies, but we tend to get a bad press!

  • I think part of the joy of winter bikes is that they should less than beautiful performance machines. That way not only do you not care too much about any salt, crash or whatever damage but you also then really notice the positive difference when spring comes around and you climb aboard your summer bike.
  • 3 club mates whipped my arse weekend on real bangers. one with panniers.

I have a commter/ single speed and a proper bike for long distance stuff. The type of ride dictates which bike I pick, not the season - thanks to Crud guards. In short, no I don't have a winter bike.

I'm riding a Giant 1.5 over winter and on the turbo. Wasn't bought as a winter bike but I upgraded to a Focus Cayo last summer so the Giant has been relegated to commuting and winter slogs.

I've decided the Ribble is going to be relegated to commuting duties (at least it will when I start commuting again).

In a couple of weeks I'm going to build up a "new" carbon winter bike when all the bits come.

When I got my Cervelo RS I 'traded in' my Merida Road Ride 903 at my LBS...........think I might get it back and use as my training bike to keep my RS sweet.

Its got full Tiagra but weighs in at about 20 lbs........suppose pushing teh extra weight will help me when I jump onto the Cervelo??

Hopper - that bike is a bit too sexy to be a winter bike surely!?

Like others my winter bike is my relegated road bike when I got a new one. Luckily I can fit full mudguards on it so it does the job perfectly well Trek Pilot 1.0, mixture of Sora/ Tiagra and Mavic Aksium wheels.
