Cable ferrules - plastic or metal?

Amazingly (for such an exciting topic) I couldn't find any discussions about this on the whole entire internet, let alone this forum. And Sheldon has nothing to say on the matter so let's start the first ever thread on the subject... Or at least the first thread that will (hopefully) show up on the first page of Google results for "ferrules plastic or metal" so that other future cyclists might benefit from our wise outpourings of knowledge.
So what's the difference? Which ones should I buy? How come? What's for tea?

I prefer plastic. Having had the metal ones weld to my frame, never again!0
