    They often are perfect foods.

Consider also bananas, fig rolls and malt cake. Plenty of water too.

Some uni did a study into this a few years back & reckoned fig rolls were as good as energy bars. Sorry that's vague, just remember reading it in a bike mag, don't remember which uni or anything.

Also, seeing as energy drinks/foods are expensive, if you're making your own you can buy fructose (fruit sugar) from most supermarkets. It releases it's energy slower than sucrose (normal sugar) making it better for excercise as it doesn't causes an insulin backlash.
Fructose is about twice as sweet as normal sugar so I guess use 1/2 as much.

Nothing secret about the benefits of fig rolls and they're brilliant.

Roughly 12g of carbs per roll and very low fat, and what I like about them is they are small and easy to eat on the move.

Mixed nuts and dried fruit. For added goodness the ones with choc chips in are pretty good.

Soreen malt loaf has also been a long standing favourite with the guys I ride with.

Oh also a bag of jelly babies just tops it off.

Off for a rde now just so I can eat some goodies :D

    Homemade flapjack and bananas.

+1 for the home made flapjack.
approx 500g oats (or 350g oats + 150g fruity muesli)
    200g butter
    80g sugar
    2-3 large spoonfuls golden syrup
ginger (powder, or cubes of candied ginger)
    ground nutmeg
    cinnamon

you can add eg. dried apricots, hazelnuts - or whatever your heart desires

Melt butter, sugar & syrup in pan.
Mix in spices, then add oats (or oat & muesli mix) and stir well

Tip into a large baking tray about 2-3cm deep (or one inch if you're over the pond), and smooth it down so that it's flat

Put in an oven pre-heated to around 170 centigrade for 15-20 minutes (until just starting to go golden)

Remove from oven, then after a couple of minutes, slice into portions. Don't try to remove just yet.

Let it cool, then remove from the tray.
Delicious, and great for long rides. Take a couple of slices on a 2 hour ride. One day I'll experiment with a fructose version too.
