Rosedale Chimney

I have to travel up to Krkbymoorside tomorrow for work. It occurs to me that I'll be quite close to this legendary little hill. If all goes well I could be away from there by 3pm, so should I chuck the bike in the car on the off chance I have the time? Or is it likely unclimbable due to snow / ice still?

Weather forecast looks reasonable...

I'd not be surprised if they close that road, I'd have thought it'd be too steep or too risky to grit.

Perhaps I'll just drive over and have a look at it tomorrow. Then make an excuse for a second visit once it warms up a bit.
  • I think I'd be a bit cautious - it really is an unforgiving brute either going up or down, and traction can be a problem even in relatively dry weather.

Thanks for the advice, I shall proceed with caution!

If you do go park in the village and walk. If the snow is bad you don't want to be driving up or down the chimney!

try the road from Blakey top (near lion pub) down to Farndale. Blakey bank I think.

I can't walk up it. Saw the milk race climb it as a kid and to this day have no idea how a man can ride up the sod.

The 25% jobbie from Farndale church houses to Farndale West is impossible. Trout fishing from that tiny bridge is as hard!

Believe it or not Wayne Randle rode up it earlier this year in the big ring

    show off

I am going back to when I was 10. Probably seems like a gentle slope to me now.

I know that area like the back of my hand.... know all the farmers there.

I'd steer well clear today as there's vast amounts of black ice even on the main roads in Sheffield.

A guy a know rode in the Ras a few years ago. One of the foreign riders asked him one morning "who is the old man who rides on the front all day in the little cog" as he pointed at Wayne Randle

Was driving to work this morning and on the local radio they said that Blakey Bank was closed due to snow.

Sounds about right. According to the lads in my club who knew him in the 80s, his catch phrase was "COME THROUGH!!" (booming Yorkshire accent). They all used to politely decline however and get pulled along at 40mph to the finish line

He rode a race up here a few years back. Rode from Barnsley, signed on, won the race, rode back to Barnsley again. The man is a machine.

Unfortunately though he was in an accident late last year and was pretty badly broken up. He's in crutches at the moment :(

Ditto above, don't even think about it, by car you're stuck in it, at least you can bail off a bike when it starts to slide.
Love to take you round there one day but this is not the time.

Didn't bother going any further than obsolutely neccessary; needed a push from a friendly van driver to get me out of the car park when I left the office I was visiting! Up on the moors the temperature stayed at minus 2 all day, so I decided to leave Rosedale for a warmer, drier day.

    I will be back though!

If you like riding in that neck of the woods have a go at The Ryedale Rumble in August. You hit the chimney with about 100miles in your legs. Usually a crowd at the top to either cheer or laugh at yer.

It's a great route on the moors & each time I've done it the sun has shone.
