Hello All

Looking for advise, I've invested in a nice road bike and want to get some pedels and shoes, now this mine field and all the shore web site I look do not really explain what hoes work with what pedals etc..

Also I am look to maybe do a Duathlon and here it might be better idea to get a MTB specific show and pedal rather than a expensive ti option; since with MTB shoe it will be more confutable to try and run in the transition area...

All advise is welcome, also in this climate I do not have mountains of money to spend to nice priced option is a must.

Regards

If you want to be able to walk any distance let alone run then you should go for SPD pedals and MTB style shoes. I would recomend Shimano M520 pedals.

These are virtually bomb proof and as cheap as chips. I would recommend going to a good bike shop and trying shoes on as fit is most important. Make sure you get shoes with a recessed sole for SPD cleats .

Hi, I brought this combination about a month ago for about £67 in the sale. Dont know if they are doing the deal now, but if not, it is still under £80

The OP did mention being able to run short distances in the shoes. Have you tried running in a shoe with an SPD-SL cleat on it. Or any other non recessed cleat.

I don't know the answer, but surely some company has tried to tap the market by creating a triathlon shoe suitable to both the running and cycling stages?

Personally I wouldn't go for such a shoe (love my NBs too much!), but if budget is the driving factor...

It would be difficult. The shoe would need to be very stiff for cycling and flexible for running.

Agreed, though maybe it would be ever so slightly more possible if the bike and run sections were off-road, as some are these days, then you could use the grooves in the MTB shoes for cutting through the rough stuff on foot too.

On the topic of SPD shoes, they're plenty stiff enough for me, I use SIDI Dominators - expensive but a great fit. I think SIDI do some cheaper shoes than this though, called the Giau IIRC.

You can even get single sided super light SPD road pedals, look at Ritchey, Exustar and Wellgo who do SPD clones that shave weight off in an area where it IS beneficial.

As an ex fell runner and now mountain bike orienteer I can assure you you can run much faster in a pair of Walshs than you can in even the best MTB shoes. I use Spec BG Expert which have a flexible toe section to help running but they are nowhere near the Walsh.
