LiT/Sewinman what's wrong with eggbeaters on a road bike? Are SPDs better/best for a roadbike?

    I know nothing. Just asking.

    What are these for?
Keeping shoes clean and feet a bit warmer. Useful in spring/autumn when thicker overshoes are too much.

    I am not expert but....

There is nothing wrong really, its just not the done thing amongst the roadie crowd. SPD-SLs offer more stability and a wider base and are designed for purpose rather than being designed for MTB. Some also say that you get 'hot spots' of pain and discomfort from SPDs.

If i had the readies i would get Look Keos and some Sidi shoes. But i don't, and it probably won't make a huge difference to my limited standard of riding.

Fixed that - SPDs are the double-sided MTB pedals with the little brass cleats - SPD-SLs are the large single-sided road pedals with the big triangular plastic cleats.

The larger surface area of road cleats is supposed to offer a greater area for power transfer, thus reducing the pressure on the foot, and thus reducing the risk of hot spots, over SPDs, for example.

Some people find SPDs fine for long rides, others get hot spots even with road pedals - end of the day - you're not a pro, so use whichever is the best compromise of cost/comfort/function. Which looks like exactly what you've done!

    Enjoy!

Well i have never had any other type but i think the logic is that you can clip in on 4 sides of the pedal with an egg beater as they are shaped like an X and spin around, rather than two sides with standard MTB pedals.

    Some Sealskinz socks and gloves.
    Bar tape
And some overshoes, to see what all the fuss is about.

Just ordered saddle bar, patch kit, multi tool, tyre levers and track pump.

And I just bought a new cycle computer from Tesco (£15 for a 17 function computer seemed good value)

Just as I was about to set off for my afternoon ride the postie arrived with my new overshoes and Pro X-pert gloves, they were both toasty warm the whole ride.

  • Bought a Buff style thingy from Aldi this morning for the princely sum of £2.99. Seems very good for the money, can't say it seems any different to the real ones, and is in a fetching grey camouflage.
