Guess the forks...

I have a problem and I'm hoping that a little healthy guessing competition will solve it...

I bought my girlfriend a second hand Specialised Hard Rock Sport which had been customised so it does not have original parts (as far as I can tell). and the forks that are on there are too big for her so I want to sell them and get her something smaller but the problem is I have no idea what forks they are so I don't know how to sell them or how much for. so here are some photos... I hope to get some better ones on the weekend but if anyone can help that would be great. There are Fox decales on there and nothing to suggest that the have been 'put on' there but I don't know... so don't assume they are definately fox. there is no modle or anything like that. So... what do YOU think they are???

  • definitely not fox, IIRC they've never used a preload adjuster like that.

Great, one step closer to (or further away from) knowing what they are!

I've also never seen a fox sticker up there near the stanchions.
My guess is, some kind of Suntour fork.

As an additional question... what and how should I go about selling them given that I don't know anything about them?

They are AT LEAST 2 years old and they do not have V brake fittings if that makes any difference - I've search pics of xcm's and can't find any that look like these (plus they feel too nice to ride to be xcm's :))

Is there any part of the fork i could photograph to help you ascertain what they are?

I'd suggest that you sell them as they are, just explain that you're not quite sure what they are, but give travel measurements, any available adjustments, etc.

Well, it would be nice if you could LINK TO THE PICTURES INSTEAD OF CROPPING THEM with the forum's scrollbars.
That way we can have a proper look at them.

suntour XCR i think... althought the prload adjusters look diferent....in what way are they "too big" for your GF?

Knowing her it is probably more that they 'look' big! she wants her bike to look 'girly'. They are also too high for her.

from axel to bottom of steerer is 500mm, the circumference of the stanchions is 130mm and the travel is 130mm

ah, 130mm travel is too much on a Hardrock, but surely they dont look too bad? i mean, come on....

    suntour XCR i think...

Think you could be onto something there, have found this pic which looks very similar apart from the left hand knob (the red one looks the same):

It's an RST Gila, standard spec on the hardrock in 2007. The Suntour XCM specced in 2008 has mini fork-boots.

She made me change those Kenda tyres cos they looked too 'beefy'!

i have an 06 hardrock which had an rst gila and it has no red adjuster knob for rebound.....just a black preload adjuster.....

on that basis, unless the 07 model was different...i would say not an rst gila.

The arch on the Gila is more rounded than these - at least the pictures i found on google :).

Can't really see the dropouts on yours, or the preload adjuster on this one, but I reckon it's one of these:

    targi06_suntour_xcr.jpg

The crown on the lowers looks exactly like my old XCRs and the finish is about right too. Plus the adjusted on the right leg seems to be a match too. If you take 'em to bits I'll tell you for sure ;)

I think it looks like they probably are XCR's - Will have a closer look when I take them off the frame to confirm and then I'll just list them on ebay with a link to this post (although I hate ebay and will probably try and sell them on gumtree or something first:))
  • Look like suntor raidons if they have 130 mm of travel

+1 my 06 RST forks don't look much like that either

The 07 was different. RST are an OE manufacturer who offer wildly different specs for each bike, even when a model might share a series name.

I am 100% on it being an RST Gila.

The suntour was not specced until 2008. The XCM lacks the aforementioned knobs, as well as having the mini-boots rather than in-built wiper seals.

so what about the raidon? see gaff_taff's second link above?

Just seen that. Looks right on the money, except that the disc only raidons were 100mm. The later vee brake compatable raidons were 80-120mm.

    This fork makes no sense.

i just measured it myself and may well not be 130mm thats just what the bit from the seal to the clamp is... but it is defo not v brake. how should i correctly measure the travel? thanks

Raidons look like a good bet to me.

I will say, I'm sure they're Suntours of some sort, because of the stanchion coating and its obvious attempts to escape down around the seals. That's a definate Suntour USP ;)

Ideally? Whip the springs out, fully compress the fork and check the residual stanchion showing, then deduct from the total amount of stanchion showing when the fork is uncompressed.

Realistically, the way you just did it.

i did consider different oe models as well....and obviously models do change year on year.

    See my subsequent post.

And I'm still not 100% on what it is supposed to be.

A Gila would have made sense. The raidon does not.
