I have just purchased a Project One 2010 Madone 5.9 in matte onyx carbon/platinum/placid blue, and its fitted with the standard Bontrager Race Lite Wheels, but I'm wanting to upgrade them to a lighter, faster wheel....

I have a choice of either upgrading them with:-
Bontrager Race X Lite Wheels.
or
Mavic 2009 Kysrium SL Wheels.
or
Shimano 7850 CL Dura Ace Clincher Wheels.

Since ive never used any of these wheels can anyone advice me which are probably the best to purchase?

Cheers.

Its the only wheels my local bike shop have stocked, plus there in the price range of £600 - £700, I dont want to be paying anymore...... I want a light & fast wheel..... And I like the look of these 3 wheels.

if that's your budget - I would extend my search a little......I'm sure your LBS could order in pretty much anything if you asked them....

I wouldnt even know where to start looking for any other wheel sets, ive just read the reviews on certain sites about those 3 wheels, I just want some first hand experience on people who have ridden on these wheels or any other wheels which are similar.

I suggest a phone conversation with Derek...

Good grief Bontrager wheels wouldn't even be near my list let alone on it ....... there are far better choices out there.

I asked an open question about wheels in this price bracket with Condor Cycles last week and they pointed me very much in the direction of the Mavics for good all round reliability.

I noted on another thread the other day that Merlin cycles are offering the dura ace for less than £500, so maybe you could employ some negotiating skills with your lbs if you are tempted by the shimanos.

+1 for Derek at Wheelsmith or big Al at Wheelcraft.

You will get a much better wheel handbuilt for the cost of a Factory set.

    That's cheap!

    Which shop?

Still think you could do better at Wheelsmith though...

Merlin had them on offer a few weeks back at something similar, but they're back to 640 now

  • Nice bike,

I have had my 2010 matt onyx for a couple of weeks, also specced the bontrager race wheels as I new I would upgrade, the bonties are rubbish but you have to spec something, I upgraded to a pair of dura ace carbon laminates, awesome wheelset, strong, very light, responsive and comfortable, they dont scream out as a top wheel as they are more subtle, until you take a closer look then the coments come from your mates.

The mavics are well proven but are everywhere, I wanted something different and am very happy, got a deal for £360.00 so that also was a major factor, looking to get the 50mm for summer, I'm sure you will be happy with the mavics at that price, I am still running my original kysiriums SSC, they still run true and smooth 8 years on.

    enjoy your new toy.
