Hello all! My FLBS is closed til Tuesday and my bike friends are confused as to what's going on with my bike.

I have a puncture. I would like to replace the tube. I have disconnected the gear cable from the Nexus hub on my bike, but I can't get any slack on my chain to lift out the wheel. The axle is as far forward in the horizontal drop-outs as it will go.

I've seen some people (e.g. here http://www.bikeradar.com/beginners/foru ... t=12590523) allude to easy ways to remove the wheels on a Tap, and I wondered if anyone knew of it here?

This is my guy:

Help! What's the trick I'm missing?

Try unshipping the chain from the chainwheel rather than the freewheel then you can pull the wheel out of the dropouts.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • Thanks for the tip -- I've tried to do it that way but I can't seem to find any sort of give to shift the chain off the chainwheel. Do you have any ideas for how to lever it off?

There should be just enough slack in the chain to lift it off the chainwheel, if not then you're looking at splitting the chain and adding a link to stop this in future which will mean a slight reset of the brake pads.
