Keeping my trousers unworn (-out)

Hey all,

I do all my commuting in regular street clothes, since the places I go to - university, social events, the pub - aren't the sort of places where you can change in to and out of proper cycling gear. The only problem is that riding wears out the seats of my pants (and especially jeans) in pretty short order. Would replacing the saddle (a rather crappy, 70s, vinyl unit) help stop this, or is there anything else I can do?

Cheers,
Adam.

I get about 2 years of riding (1hr/day) out of a pair of Rohan Bags before they start to get worn. The twin-layer seat means they are still usable for non-cycling use. Bags are probably the hardest wearing "normal" trousers you can buy. Jeans are not very good in this respect.
I dont think the saddle makes any difference to wear.
  • It just happens, either buy cheaper jeans or cycle standing up everywhere!

Plenty of cycling trousers out there that look ok around the office - mine have reinforced seat and inner calves but you don't notice it
