What is a typical weight for a racing whippet, im currently 82kg.

Just curious more than anything.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

  • I'd say about 70Kgs. Same as a roadie racer methinks.

    How tall are you.

Last time I checked most xc racers were around a BMI of 22.5, downhillers 24.5.

    Lance Armstrong won the Leadville 100 weighing 73kg and he's 5' 10".

About 5'10 last bmi check i came to about 25 i think...

But bmi isn't a good indicator, i've a mate at work who's a bodybuilder he comes up in the morbidly obese category.

weight shouldnt make any difference, its the power to weight ratio and that ratio in endurance, bigger muscles fade more than a slimmer guy, there is no ideal weight
Dont look at it-ride it! they are tools not f*cking ornaments

Cyclists are not body-builders, so BMI holds up not too bad.

Two other ways of telling where your at, for those that are body builders or the like with a waist of 36" a serious look should be made of reducing it.

Or if you divide your hip measurement into your waist it should be less than 0.9

Jonah Lomu comes into that body builder scenario, 6' 5" 115kg BMI 30.1 but has a waist of 27".

It's only that muscle is heavier than fat that highly muscled people throw the BMI out, for most the BMI is not far wrong, it even works for Lance Armstrong BMI 23.1.

i find that hard to believe that jonah lomu had a waist of 27" - there are a couple websites that say that but i seriously doubt its true, im 5ft 10 and when i was really toned with a six pack my waist was over 29", so i cant imagine a 6ft 5 monster having a 27" waist, not impossible but very unlikely as it would mean he had a very weak core which as a rugby player he obviously didnt

    my BMI is 32

again, i was told i was 4-5stone over weight, though im fit and healthy.......too much muscle mass from bodybuilding is to blame. and while i can recover superfast and i may look fit, its true that more muscle on up and down rides wears me out very quickly.

im fine on 50/60 mile rides but a 10mile uphill/xc ride with a bit of downhill wears me out!

Some interesting points, im back up to 83 now but i have been focusing more on weights and a bit less on cardio, i have to mix it up otherwise it does my head in.

Oddly the bike was damned easy today, just kept on knocking out the miles so im happy in that respect.

I've heard of hip to waist ratio before, i will have a good go at measuring but from looks alone id say 0.8/0.9 at least, i've always had thunderthighs.

Waist wide hmm id say im 33" but very close to being 32" my 34" jeans hang off me, i really should sort that out then again it's the fashion.

Oh hills always used to get me as well which is what prompted me to shed so much weight in the first place i got fed up of being left behind now it's the opposite.

    Impressive weight loss there Dazza.

To show how daft BMI is, I just fall into the "overweight category" - with a 29" waist and sod all fat. And the legs of a small garden bird.

Not sure what the ideal size is but I think upper body strength is more important than many people realise - it really is handy being able to fling the bike around a bit.

MTBers (at the top of their game) often seem a bit heavier than roadies but then again I have a mate who's a regular Elite racer who is about 6ft but can't be more than 10 stone.

Guess is depends on the discipline - DHers can get away with more weight I guess.

Thanks although im a bit underwhelmed by it all which i find a bit odd, though what i am enjoying is how im in control of what my body does, people still reckon im shedding it but im not im still 82kg my trousers are hanging off me more than ever so i must be packing on muscle whilst still getting leaner which is nice.

I was just curious at what weight top riders are, im sure i read about a uci wc champion that was in the 80kg category.

Can't exercise for toffee atm, picked up a nice chesty cold, hopefully i'll knock it off by tomorrow we'll see it's been three days without exercise, im starting to get tetchy.

  • Lol at Jonah Lomu having a 27" waist - try adding an extra 8"-10" to that and his playing weight was getting close to 130kg towards the end.

BMI is redundant with the only sure way is using calipers to measure body fat percentage. Besides, if you look and feel good then the scales shouldn't really matter as it's performance that counts, not numbers.

His waist size was reported in the Guardian, and he now weights 115kg down to where he was in his teens.

I can't believe Jonah L would have a 27" waist - he's a massive bloke but not a full on bodybuilder - that's what you'd need to be to be that big and have such a tiny waist.

Dazza - I had to take a week out with a nasty cold - it was hateful! Then the routine was knocked out by two weeks of firing surf. Hardly a problem but it felt weird not running or doing weights (still kept up the morning MTB ride though).

    Back on track now.

BMI should not be used by athletes, or those of an athletic build. It's a very rough guide at best and really only designed to helped people who are overweight. It's formula is completely flored and only calculates body weight to height, not muscle.

About as useful as Ray Charles on a birdwatching trip..;-)

im 16.5 stones at 5ft.9 and ride both road and off road. i have a 34 inch waist and a bmi of 35ish but i carry low body fat . i find im very powerful in climbs and sprints and i also find it takes me a while to warm up but once i am i can keep up with the best of them i cycle 25miles on road every morning and head for trail centres at the weekends i also train weights 4 times a week. i used to compete in the decathlon in my youth then a fixation with weights kicked in so for my size id say im pretty fit and im also 35 in a couple of weeks and feel as fit as i did in my teens. weight is only an issue if its fat . im toying with the idea of doing duathlons and triathlons next year so will probably lose a stone or two

  • I read an article with a rule of thumb for climbing specialists on the road of 2 pounds of weight per 1 inch of height.

So as the OP is 180 pounds (82kg) he should be 7 foot 6 inches tall.

I wouldn't believe anything The Guardian prints. I've seen his body building photo's from the New Zealand show and judging by how soft he looked in body building terms there's not a chance in hell that his waist is 27".
