Ideal weight

What is a typical weight for a racing whippet, im currently 82kg.
Just curious more than anything.
Just curious more than anything.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

Last time I checked most xc racers were around a BMI of 22.5, downhillers 24.5.
Lance Armstrong won the Leadville 100 weighing 73kg and he's 5' 10".
But bmi isn't a good indicator, i've a mate at work who's a bodybuilder he comes up in the morbidly obese category.

Cyclists are not body-builders, so BMI holds up not too bad.
Two other ways of telling where your at, for those that are body builders or the like with a waist of 36" a serious look should be made of reducing it.
Or if you divide your hip measurement into your waist it should be less than 0.9
Jonah Lomu comes into that body builder scenario, 6' 5" 115kg BMI 30.1 but has a waist of 27".
It's only that muscle is heavier than fat that highly muscled people throw the BMI out, for most the BMI is not far wrong, it even works for Lance Armstrong BMI 23.1.

again, i was told i was 4-5stone over weight, though im fit and healthy.......too much muscle mass from bodybuilding is to blame. and while i can recover superfast and i may look fit, its true that more muscle on up and down rides wears me out very quickly.
im fine on 50/60 mile rides but a 10mile uphill/xc ride with a bit of downhill wears me out!

Oddly the bike was damned easy today, just kept on knocking out the miles so im happy in that respect.
I've heard of hip to waist ratio before, i will have a good go at measuring but from looks alone id say 0.8/0.9 at least, i've always had thunderthighs.
Waist wide hmm id say im 33" but very close to being 32" my 34" jeans hang off me, i really should sort that out then again it's the fashion.
Oh hills always used to get me as well which is what prompted me to shed so much weight in the first place i got fed up of being left behind now it's the opposite.

To show how daft BMI is, I just fall into the "overweight category" - with a 29" waist and sod all fat. And the legs of a small garden bird.
Not sure what the ideal size is but I think upper body strength is more important than many people realise - it really is handy being able to fling the bike around a bit.
MTBers (at the top of their game) often seem a bit heavier than roadies but then again I have a mate who's a regular Elite racer who is about 6ft but can't be more than 10 stone.
Guess is depends on the discipline - DHers can get away with more weight I guess.
I was just curious at what weight top riders are, im sure i read about a uci wc champion that was in the 80kg category.
Can't exercise for toffee atm, picked up a nice chesty cold, hopefully i'll knock it off by tomorrow we'll see it's been three days without exercise, im starting to get tetchy.

BMI is redundant with the only sure way is using calipers to measure body fat percentage. Besides, if you look and feel good then the scales shouldn't really matter as it's performance that counts, not numbers.
His waist size was reported in the Guardian, and he now weights 115kg down to where he was in his teens.
Dazza - I had to take a week out with a nasty cold - it was hateful! Then the routine was knocked out by two weeks of firing surf. Hardly a problem but it felt weird not running or doing weights (still kept up the morning MTB ride though).
Back on track now.
BMI should not be used by athletes, or those of an athletic build. It's a very rough guide at best and really only designed to helped people who are overweight. It's formula is completely flored and only calculates body weight to height, not muscle.
About as useful as Ray Charles on a birdwatching trip..;-)

So as the OP is 180 pounds (82kg) he should be 7 foot 6 inches tall.
I wouldn't believe anything The Guardian prints. I've seen his body building photo's from the New Zealand show and judging by how soft he looked in body building terms there's not a chance in hell that his waist is 27".
