dilema all mountain hardtail and modify or go road

Parents have suggested i get a road bike for crimbo which i am happy with they will commit £200 towards it and i have to fund the rest from relatives and my own pocket.
I have just now given them my idea of buy a decent hardtail and get a set of road tyres for it so i can use it off and on road.
If i went the latter of the routes it would be used for use on road,commuting, trails such as singletrack and very light downhill and small jumps. and would need 9 gears no more no less well maybe 7
So do you think road or hartail and road tyres?
I have in mind
Orange crush
Cube Analog
and other suggestions you could give me?
Also if you prefer the second option what choice of road tyres?

no less than 500 no more than 1k but will strect an extra 200 if it realy is good

This is what I have set my Zaskar LE up to do - light for the roads, and decent for XC.

You could build one up for that. But everyone knows the Zaskar is a better frame ;-)

Just tell them you can use a dirt tyre on the road, it'll just make you fitter.
Let's just say i overtake plenty of people on road bikes on my ss mtb with knobblie tyres.0 -

But he wants it for a somewhat different use - it was rated highly as an all rounder but just needs a few tweaks.0 -

How heavy is the Crush?
Just thinking you could get the GT Aggressor Elite for £1k, or £800 if you wait for a sale. That comes in at around 13kg standard.0 -
