Read the article and the comments......... it would appear that there are a lot of 'Daily Mail' readers out there. The cyclists need some support in the comments section !!

There seem to be a lot of articles like this doing the rounds lately. Surely us cyclists' on-road etiquette can't suddenly have degenerated that much in the space of a couple of months? Are embittered motorists cheesed off with taxes, speed cameras, etc. looking for a scapegoat [1], maybe? Or has some sort of new MS Word-compatible 'write your own anti-cyclist reactionary bile' software recently come on the market?

    [1] That question sounds a wee bit like a self-contained Mail/Express headline.

Most likely that motorists are beginning to panic and can see their coveted right to rule the road being taken away - global warming, the cycling lobby, and higher oil prices are scaring them - awww bless, poor dears.

I still maintain that somewhere on the NUJ website is a members only section that has an automated Op-Ed generator where the useless hack in question can type in 'Cyclists' and it will immediately provide a self-consciously 'controversial' article.

Also most of these rants seem to be London-centric where the average commuting cyclist has to be more aggressive just to stay alive.

Is there a similar feature for Daily Express employees where you just type in "Diana" to generate a random article?

Something I always wonder is what people class as a cyclist? Is it anyone riding a bike or someone riding a bike who looks like they do it a lot? Most of the worst cycling I see is by people on battered old MTBs and BMXs, they ride on the wrong side of the road, jump onto pavements and all the other cliches but don't seem to get any abuse from motorists. Stick them in lycra or just a reflective jacket and they would get a constant barrage of abuse.
  • Is there any other group in society so wilfully hypocritical, so certain of their moral superiority?
