A mate of mine has recently go one of these:

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.18695

We went for a ride on Sunday night and it kept switching itself off. We would be riding along and everything was fine and then all of a sudden it would just switch itself off.

He would unscrew the torch slightly and it came back on (temporarily).

Has anyone else experienced any of these problems?

Any suggestions?

Also, I have a magicshine, I've used it twice now, probably for about three hours altogether with a mixture of low and high settings. When I went to charge it this morning I plugged the battery pack into the charger and a little green led lights up on the charger before I plug it into a socket.

Does this mean there is a connection between the battery pack and the charger?
Or does it mean it doesn't need charging?
Someone said it goes red when it needs charging?

  • This should help you fix your mates problem:

    It's quiet common!

As for the DX bike light mine has the same behaviour. I dont think it's a problem. If I connect the charger to the battery the light goes green but when I plug the charger in - it turns red to indicate that it's charging.

    Hope that helps.
  • With the Magicshine, Mine goes green when you connect the batterypack to the charger, like you say, I think this is to show there is a connection. If you go plug the charger in to the wall and switch it on, the light should turn to red (assuming it needs charging). That's how mine works anyway.
  • Thanks for the help guys. :D

The link for the torch should help my mate.

I just tried plugging it in again and the light stays green

I'm using an old shaver adapter, I just changed the fuse to see if there was something wrong with that but still no joy, strange.

Also, did your magicshine come with a strap to attach the battery pack to the frame? Mine didn't.
  • When you say a strap?

Mine came with a nylon bag thing, the top wraps round the stem and seals with velcro. Mine also had what seemed to be 1 half of some kind of buckle type affair just sewn on for no apparent reason :?
  • It's just that it has two buckles on the bag so I just assumes it was for like a velcro strap?
  • Yeh, I never did figure out what they were for, just seemed to be some random straps they had lying round the factory and decided to stick 'em on for laughs.

I suppose you could use them to fashion yourself some kind of strap to make it double secure.
  • I had some small velcro straps, can't remember where I got them from, so I've been using them to strap it to my top tube. Trouble is they're too short and the battery pack started to slip off the other night.

I didn't think to use it in my stem  I'll try that tonight, going for a ride after work.

Still not sure what's going on with my battery pack though, I don't know if it is charging.

I had the same problem with my battery not charging, the fuse in the adaptor was only 1amp and kept blowing as soon as it was plugged into the wall. I then bought an adaptor from tesco with a 13amp fuse in it, now the light charges up fine and lasts for 3hrs 40 on high

Use your light untill it completely dies and shuts off this will reset the digital circuit in the battery. The battery should then fully charge, Only run the battery down completely if you need to reset the circuit, repeated full discharges will damage the battery.

Also you could try your friends charger to see if yours has a fault

  • What I'll probably do is let it run flat or flatter and try to to charge it after tonights ride, see if it kicks in then.

I would use my mates charger but he has a p7 torch not a magicshine so the chargers are different.

What amp fuse is in your shaver adaptor?

  • Its a 13amp fuse so it should be ok.

    I guess it should work?

I did order a travel adapter from DX at the same time as my Magicshine but it was out of stock so it is coming seperately
  • I now think my charger doesn't work at all

I have a charger from my old light set that fits the battery, I won't know when it has finished charging though.

So my question is how long does it take to fully charge the Magicshine battery pack?

Any tips or advice so I don't cook the battery?
  • Turnercraig,

The Magicshine takes about 4 hours to charge.

Depends what version of the light you have but instruction link below: -

Thanks for that, I've printed a copy.

I've since bought a smart charger for it and it's working a treat, it does take about 4 hours.

    cheers

    Craig.
  • Craig

Am i correct by saying you have a 3 mode Magicshine?
I think the charger has been upgraded for the 5 mode one which i have (at least thats what I was told) - I havent had any problems.
What smart charger did you buy - do smart chargers just prevent overcharging?

    Thanks

  • Ye it's the three mode one, I've only had it since the 19th October and the charger has never worked.

This is the charger I've got after someone on here recomended it.

It basically shut off when the battery is fully charged, it also has an indication led turning from red to green when it is fully charged.

A lot to pay but worth it imo.
