need some advice on buying a road bike, It's mainly to travel on cycle paths to work and back (approx 20 miles) and going for a good spin at weekends again, mainly cycle paths, back roads etc - planning on doing approx 40-50 miles..my budget is about £500-£600 and was originally looking at a road bike- Raleigh Airlite 400. been to a few cycle shops and their advice is to buy a cyclocross bike and I've been offered a Raleigh Airlite U6 cyclocross bike for £500 approx (normally £699) plus some extras. I've checked various internet sights and this seems a pretty good deal, but can anyone suggest if I should go for this one or is there anything better, e.g dawes edge- x etc
any suggestions folks
cheers

so far the spesh tricross (mid range one @ 850) is my 1st choice, want to check out a jake snake though!0 -
I've got a Decathlon cyclocross which is this years model, the new model seems to have a full 105 groupset and the wheels are bomb proof.

I had a dilemma as to whether to get a cyclocross or touring bike to replace the near 40 year old machine I inherited and which got me back in the saddle 4 years ago after a long absence and ultimately went for the latter (at considerably more than your budget unfortunately - see Touring Bikes entry above).
A typical ride on my old Carlton is 25 - 30 miles (but I've done 50) consisting of roads, canal towpaths, the likes of the Trans Pennine trail and other tracks and paths which can be a bit rough in parts (but no mountains or quagmires!).The old 531 frame seems to take all in its stride with 27x1 1/4 in (630x32mm) tyres and go reasonably quickly on the road. Great stuff!
Not so much choice for touring bikes as cyclocross though but I'm told good steel gives a more comfortable ride than aluminium (although I've never ridden the latter myself).0 -

Yes, the Raleigh U6 is a CC bike, but the review here shows it as Airlite X

Some Kona Jakes are going for £580, the Kinesis Crosslight 5T for £810 (great value at fatbirds). Oh it's so tempting to get rid of one of my MTB and get a cyclocross.CAAD9
