Spoke Gone: Wheel Expert Needed

I’ve had a spoke break on my rear wheel (a handbuilt Mavic Open Sport). Two
questions:

i) The wheel’s done about 1,700 miles, mainly commuting (inc kerbs,
panniers etc) and having my 3 yr old son in a child seat while riding
on trails. Have I got grounds for taking it back to the shop
(although it’s a pain for me to get to)?

ii) I want to get the spoke replaced & the wheel re-trued properly.
Can anyone recommend a real expert on wheelbuilding roughly in the
Kingston area (say going out to Richmond, Wimbledon, Wandworth, maybe
Epsom)? Alternatively I could do Hammersmith, Shepherds Bush.

Thanks,

Michael

PS: I know it could be cheap / easy to fix myself, but TBH I haven't
got the time to learn at present.

I would say that after 1700 miles the shop is no longer responsible. Sounds like you've gotten good use out of it to this point. There is only so much you can expect out of a bike wheel. Get it fixed ASAP. Riding it will only make things worse.
As for a good shop??? I'm on the other side of the duck pond, so you're on your own
until some one from your area chimes in. Although I would venture a guess that this is something most shops can handle. I would hope so anyway.:wink:
  • Sigma is prob nearest, be prepared for snootiness at your low-end wheel though
