As title, i bought a kit recommended in another thread but there's not a tool to remove my Formula brake rotors ?, the part is this one below (marked Formula), i was told the shimano cassette tool would do it, but i tried it and it doesn't fit, it works on my cassette but its to big for the lock !?

  • ok, on further investigation it appears to be the right tool, but its not deep enough inside to accept my wheel parts before it hits the Formula lock !!!, any ideas on a longer one ?

it says it works with the disc lock rings.

Wait, you ARE removing your QR lever first, right?

im not sure how to take that :D , if its not a joke then yes i have lol

  • you can always take the axle out in order to get the tool in. Or just the locknut and cone from one side.

TBH i would rather just get a tool that fits :)

  • meh... how often do you remove your rotors? I tend to only do it when i'm servicing a hub so they come off after the locknut and cone.

Ive got the exact same problem with my rear wheel rotor, ive got a park tools lock ring tool that isnt deep enough so i brought another one from CRC that looked pretty deep in the picture and gues what, it wasnt deep enough either so i wasted another fiver.

The only thing i could do was to undo the locknut holding the cone in place and then tighten the rotor on and then try and retighten the cone/locknut. Its not a very good solution at all and i would like a proper lockring tool that will fit but they all seem to be very shallow and not fit over the axle which is very frustrating and surprising being a shimano product you'd have think they would have considered a problem like that before hand.

Well, have you considered a shimano lockring tool?

Hang on, I've just checked shimano's webby, and their lockring are all external splines.
They have a tool similar to an external BB spanner to undo them.

do you consider these to be external splines ?

and where did you see the info, please :)

  • I have encountered the same problem with the X-tools lockring tool from CRC:
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=10183

The problem with removing the cone nut and lock nut before using using the tool, is that the cone nut sits just below the level of the lockring, so it's not possible to get a cone spanner firmly on it. The axle protrudes too far into the locking tool.

The X-tool version just about grips the lockring, with the cone/locknut in place, in my case. And I can get the lockring just about tight enough by making sure I keep as much weight pushed down on top of the tool. It isn't ideal as there's a risk of stripping the tool or lockring. I would like something more positive.

    So any ideas are welcome...
  • the cyclo one won't work...
You need the park tool one (the only one i've found to fit thus far.

Nope. The one on the left isn;t a Shimano one, either. Anyway, those are internal splines, which is what I thought Shimano used as well, but according to their website, their hubs all seem to use an externally splined lockring. :?
    What hubs have you got?
  • Not sure if i'm missing somethign here... but they're just for normal center lock rotors.
The Park Tool tool I post above will get your rotors off...

In fact... considering i have the same park cassette tool + shimano CL disks, i'm 100% sure that it'll work.

The rotor lockrings on my hubs use the exact same lockring mechanism as the cassete, infact i had a spare cassette lock ring and tried it just to see if it was the same and yes they are so im not sure what u mean by external splined lock ring unless ur looking at a completely different hub altogether.

A cassette lockring tool will undo and tighten a rotor aslong as it can fit over the axle assembly, i did my front wheel no problem its just the back where the problems come in.

See, even lowly Deore hubs have external lockrings :?

    I'm confused.
  • yeehaamcgee
Whats to be confused about?! lol.

Its just a different way of keeping your disks on your hubs.... you can get 6bolt adapters if you need/want to :)

Well I don't know what hub you, or the OP, have, do I?

As for what's to be confused about. From what I can tell, those lockrings are NOT what hold shimano's discs in place.
