Crankset - Removeable rings?

I'm looking at getting a very cheap bike off ebay as a hack. Would want it to be singlespeed. Looking at this crankset do you reckon the rings are removeable, ie to leave just one?

Finally, the cassette on the bike is a 6 speed. If the spacers I currently own for a singlespeed conversion at the back aren't the right size, is there somewhere I can buy new ones with different thicknesses? Cheers.

It doesn't look like they are to me.

There are no 6 speed cassettes - it will be a spin on freewheel.

im pretty sure theyre not removable-the bolts you can see look like they were for a flimsy guard.

im trying to turn my jump bike into an xc/lightweight road bike too, nightmare trying to do it on the cheap, i shuda just bought xc bike in the 1st place-ive never jumped with it. doh

O yeah forgot about that. Thanks! Would a single speed conversion kit still work or not in this case?? Cheers.

Freehub based single speed kits like this would not work with that wheel .

  • Ahhh Ok. So how would one go about it?? I've never worked with anything other than freehubs before.

New rear wheel with a freehub, then you could fit the SS kit

    not easy at all.

I would look for a new wheel with a cassette body and modify a freehub SS kit.

    as adaptors like this

    are like rocking horse shit.

but you would then use a BMX freewheel.

As SS says, bolts are for chainguard not the rings, however there were 6 speed cassettes, uniglide? and these will not fit on a 7 speed cassette body as they had equally spaced /sized splines.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Ah yes, uniglide! Not seen one of those for a long time!

Could be one, but I doubt it. You need two chainwhips to remove!
