Right, so I've gone out and bought a nice shiny new training diary, my first one.

I am a bit confused as to what I record in it. I can record what I did i.e. cycle 10 TT. What other type of information should I be ideally recording to make this worthwhile?

Any hints or tips gratefully received.

Cheers
CJ

  • Basically you're using it as a way to track progress to see how you training is working, you can track trends across it too, IE when do you get tired, how long does it take you to recover etc etc.

I use a big Excel sheet for mine and record the following

    Date
    Phase of training
    Workout
    Route
    Weather
    Distance
    Av. Speed
    Waking HR
    Average HR on ride
    Max HR on ride
    Ride rating (out of 5)
Any notes on ride (including some of the above stats for intervals)
    Time in HR Zones
Weight (with the water/fat % from the scales)
    Calories In
    Calories out
Anything i did differently on the bike.

You may wish to record your power stuff too.

How do you manage to fit in riding your bike as well?

Funny you should mention that... My girlfriend reckons i'm glued to it. Filling it in take up about 20 minutes of every riding day... All the data is, by and large, already in the Polar, however.

Overkill for me, I record date, length of ride, average speed (from computer) distance in miles & km (spreadsheet calculation).
I then have a comments section for recording route, weather, feeling crap etc.
And weight, when I can be bothered to weigh myself on return.
Total it all monthly including # of rides so I can compare overall month on month
    My knees hurt !

I'm a total numbers junie though, so it keeps training interesting for me Being able to graph things and mess about with data is very helpful after a 4 hour ride in the rain.
