Servicing freehub / replacing ball bearings

I recently noticed a hollow clicking noise from the rear wheel on my road bike when i am free-wheeling, so i left it in a bike shop to replace the ball bearings, but they just re greased the old bearings as they didn't have any in stock to suit the wheel hubs, but the noise is still there, so would the freehub body and bearnings need replacing, if so i am going to try it myself but i need advise on what tools and parts i need.

The hubs are Shimano Ultegra on a 9 speed cassette

So i know i need cone spanners but what size?
A freehub removal tool which one?
What size ball bearings? There are nine each side.
I have the allen key needed to remove the free hub body fixing bolt.
hope i haven't missed any tools or parts, if so let me know please.

    1/4 inch ball bearings, 9 each side. Cone spanners usually come in pairs comprising 13/14/15/16 mm, so covering you for all. I think cones are 13/14 mm but would have to check.

    Yours may not be identical but will be undoubtedly similar. It sounds as if you have a freewheel problem; this is easily replaced as a contained unit. It's still a good idea to service the hub bearings yourself, though.

    13/14mm for the front, 15/16 for the rear and a 17mm for the locknuts.
    I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

    Redve when you refere to spanners for the rear wheel do you mean one 15mm spanner and one 16mm spanner

    They usually come double ended, 15mm at one and 16mm at the other though in practice you'll only use one cone spanner and the 17mm/6" jussie when loosening or the more skilled art of tightening them.
    I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
