Is the UCI trying to help Contador out of Astana?

McQuaid said that the UCI has been in regular contact with the Spaniard in recent weeks, with Contador also travelling to the UCI headquarters to discuss the situation. If Astana retains its ProTour status then according to McQuaid, "Contador is under contract for 2010."

However, if the licence is revoked then Contador - who is being courted by QuickStep, Garmin-Slipstream and Caisse d'Epargne - could leave. "If they lose their ProTour licence then everything [regarding Contador] changes," said McQuaid.

Not that I'd be upset at that. I'd actually prefer him on Caisse d'Epargne but still very, very interesting.

    I guess it is in their interests to 1. have Astana out as they have been problematic and 2. have the best GC rider in the World in a good set-up.

    Hopfully this annoying back and forth will get cleared up soon.

    The PT scrap of paper will have no impact on the outcome.
    If he is able to leave, he will, if not, it's because he's stuck.

    Nothing at all to do with McQuaid, IMO.

    You sure? His contract might say it's contingent upon a Pro Tour license or simply that he's signed to join a pro tour team. It all depends what's in there.
