Following on from another thread, what's the most treacherous act you've seen at the Worlds?

I'll go first, Greg Lemond chasing down US team mate Jonathan Boyer in the 1982 Worlds at Goodwood, with Beppe Saronni on his wheel. Whoops.

1962, Salo, Italy - group of 4 riders away with 2 laps to go... Shay Elliot, Jean Stablinski and two Belgians.

Stablinski attacks and Elliot refuses to work, because they're on the same trade team and are close friends.

Stablinski gets caught, Elliot attacks. Stablinski sits on, right, to repay the favour? Not quite - he pays the two Belgians to bring Elliot back and goes on to take the rainbow jersey

Just read Maerrtens autobiography - there were a lot of people who he considered "stabbed him in the back", but he had a pretty low opinion of everything Merckx did after that incident. Good read if you get the chance.

Bronzie, whats the box called? i fancy a bit of that...
  • If we're talking about the same book, it's called Fall from Grace.

  • That is a good read

He also hints at a 'Campag' conspiracy at the 73 worlds - they didn't want a shimano equipped rider winning :?

Correcting myself - it was a German and a Belgian, not two Belgians.

I uploaded a clip from a Shay Elliot documentary that was on a few months ago where they talk it:

Yeah that's the one. Borrowed my copy off a friend so I can't refer back as I've now returned it, but it's a real "warts and all" tale of how he brought and sold races, cheated dope tests etc. Fascinating stuff.

  • Italian teams used to be incapable of working selflessly for one or two designated leaders.

In the 2001 elite men's RR, Paolo Lanfranchi led a group that chased down a last lap solo break by Gilberto Simoni that looked like it might just have had the legs to get the win. In the end Paolo Betinni didn't quite win the large bunch sprint, one that was also contested by at least three other Italians.

    :D

Amazingly they got it all together as a team the following year for Cipollini's win.

Wasn't 2002 Ballerini's first year in charge? He's transformed the Italian team, making them united in a common goal. The results speak for themselves.

Great clip but the camera man must have had the camera mounted on a very long spring on top of his head! Nearly felt car sick after watching that! :)

Remember that one with the Finish in Ronse Belgium and Claud Criquielion the home Favorite made his effort the wrong side of Steve Bauer (Canada) and the observer Mario Fondriest collecting a gift win.
They disqualified Bauer and later Claud took him to court for compensation but I cannot remember the outcome but I don't think he won.

is that the same race were Maertens led the chase against Merckx and brough Gimondi back to him in the final lap when Eddy was away in a break ?
Gasping - but somehow still alive !

According to Maertens he crossed the gap to Merckx on his own, but them Merckx sat up, so allowing Gimondi and Ocana to come back as well. Whatever, Meartens certainly played the role of the 'loyal lead out man' in the sprint, clearly looking back for Merckx and then having to try to sprint for a second time once he realised it was Gimondi coming past, not Merckx.
  • Benoni Beheyet - beat Van Looy into second at Renaix with Darrigade 3rd - in 1963 I think. I was there with my brother - but not on the finish line; saw the replay of the finish on a TV in the back of a furniture van!!

Of course Van Looy never forgave him and Beheyt's only further significant win was I believe the Tour of Belgium.
