Newbie needing advice on BB and Chainset fitting

Hi guys, really appreciate your help here.
I'm gradually piecing together a new summer bike for next season., and have just taken delivery of an Ultegra SL Compact Chainset and Hollowtech BB.
In all my years cycling I've never touched replaced/fitted a BB, and I want to make sure everything is right on my new pride and joy.
The Chainset was not supplied (Merlin cycles) with any spacers. Given a standard 68mm frame BB and compatible BB and Chainset....can I assume that I don't need spacers. Or is this a completely wrong assumption?
If it is, how do I determined what I need? I've seen plently of guidance for MTB's but very nothing sepcific for road bikes.
cheers, Mike
Thanks
