Almost anything can be taken apart without proper tools, including bottom brackets.
Pliers, vice grips, pipe wrenches, hack saws, etc., all come to mind. I wouldn't advise
it, but it can be done. The right tool for the job(any job) makes life much easier and will lower your frustration level by leaps and bounds.0 -
It's square taper, bugger and i'm to skint for the tool. Be walking to work for a while then
Cheers for the advice all.winter beast: http://i497.photobucket.com/albums/rr34 ... uff016.jpg

Trying to replace the whole grupo as it's all buggered but the new cranks wont work with rthe square BB, tried bashing it off with screwdriver and lump hammer but that's just messing up the divets to put the tool into so i'd best leave it for now.........winter beast: http://i497.photobucket.com/albums/rr34 ... uff016.jpg

I would add that putting a new one in can also be done without proper tools. BUT..........0 -

Surely somebody lives near you who has one?
I really wouldn't recommend attempting it without the proper tool, you will really mess things up...
I borrowed a Park Tools one from a mate at work, had never removed a bottom bracket before, but removed it and refitted a new one in next to no time, it was a piece of cake......My Road Bike:-

Just got back from a mates who said he had one but it turned out to be the tool to get the crank arms off with(which i already did with a lump hammer so using that is not an option  ).
It'll be ok, i got some stuff i dont need that i can sell to raise the fundswinter beast: http://i497.photobucket.com/albums/rr34 ... uff016.jpg

I've taken a square taper BB out in the past with a large pipe wrench - just make sure you turn the right way and it should come out. Be careful close to the frame as well in case you slip....Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos0

If you're over in Bristol any time soon, let me know as I have one you're welcome to borrow. I am in work all weekend though (off Tuesday). Might also be worth using the delay to spray WD40 liberally over it - I just took my other half's out a few weeks ago and ended up having to get my blowtorch on it! (And yes I had already tried using the tool in a vice and using the frame as a lever - it was stuck fast!)
Anyway, let me know if you're Bristol way.0 -
Cheers for the offer folks

Thats the one that i used, however it came as piece of a kit, you had this handle thing that you had to turn which attached to something else which as you tighted it clockwise it undone it the other way or something, something to do with the reverse thread, it was a few months ago now so i can't remember that well, but i do know that i needed more than just that part you've ordered....My Road Bike:-

You just need a spanner to fit it. Don't forget it will probably have a RH thread on the non drive side which you remove first and a LH one on the drive side. If unsure of anything check ParkTools.
