Any advice welcome on adventure racing.

Hi Guys,
I am getting into adventure racing and need some advice from you all.
I have been looking for about a month on the internet for what is going to be the right type of bike for me. I can't go to my LBS as I am indisposed for another 2 months in a god awful place! I need a bike that is going to be light enough to negotiate climbs but tough enough to be able to cope with some downhill sections.
I have previously owned a Kona Fire Mountain which was a great bike until I wrapped it and myself around a tree stump! It was comfortable (the bike not the tree stump!) although it was a little on the heavy side!
I have in the region of £500 - £1000 depending on how much the missus spends on wedding arrangements!
Please please please offer up any and all advice on bikes and components and if contemplating undertaking a build would be a good option!

Just a couple of clarification points.
The god awful place that I am in is not prison! Its an un-disclosed part of the dessert.
I have had a good look at an Orange G3 and a couple of Cube's, but really need some inside advice on what would suit me.If it doesn't hurt in the process, its not worth doing in the first place!

I have done some more digging an research. I am now looking at the following bikes, but will be waiting until I get back to try them out if I can find dealers. Any views or opinions on the following.
