Removing Centre Lock Rotors

Hello

Ive recently bought a used Trek Soho 1.0 that im very pleased with and will use for commuting to and from work.

It comes with mechanical brake disks rather than V-brakes. The brake pads needed changing so i went to my local bike specialist and purchased the correct resin pads, all good.

Ive fitted the pads and they seem very weak in stopping power, and also the front set are extremely squeaky when slowing and a little juddery when nearly at a stop. I thought that the rotor disks may be worn so i wanted to change them but they are the centre lock ones and im not sure how you get them off? Ive read that you can use a cassette removal tool for the job but i dont want to get the wrong item. Should i even be worried about replacing the rotors, and if so what tool do i need?

The spec for the wheels are:
Shimano RM65 disc hubs

    It's a standard Shimano pattern cassette tool to take them off.

    You won't need to change the rotors yet, and probably never need to replace them unless you've bent one.

    In my experience, mech disc brakes are very set-up dependant, there is a good article on the home-page about setting up disc brakes. I suggest you give it a read through!

    Have you bedded the new pads in, they will require that before the braking becomes good again.

    Bed them in, bed them in and then bed them in again. Find a big hill, get up to 30mph ish and slam on the front brake as hard as possible, without loosing front end or going over the bars. :wink: (lower you seat a bit so you can get your weight right back over it).
    Do this at least 4 or 5 times, but make sure you let the disc and pads cool down before doing each set.
    I do one front run, then a rear run. The fronts should be cooled down then, so repeat.
    Its a pain in the arse when they wear out as the stopping is just coming in...

    thanks chaps appreciate your comments, i think ill find a hill and give them a good breaking session.

    Do pads have a particular side in the caliper that they should go on? Iooked and it didnt have a left or right option on them?
