Road ID vs UTAG

This has probably been mentioned before, but the power of "SEARCH" hasn't given me anything useful.

As I tend to train on my own (all my other friends ride MTBs) and in quietish areas I'm thinking about getting some sort of ID to wear, just so if I don't make that bend people know where to send the flowers. Now, I've seen the UTAG USB ID tags (http://www.digitaldogtag.co.uk/utag-sport.html) and wondered if anyone had them, or if anyone worked in the medical profession to know if they access them or not. My fear with it is that the hospital may be worried about getting a computer virus from someone elses PC by using these.

I know the Road IDs look good, and you can personalise a message so you could add "Organ Donor" or "Got that wrong" onto it, but wish one would be of preference?

I'm a realist and realise it probably won't save my life, but if I shoud die then I want my next of kin contacted as soon as possible so my organs can be released to potentially save someone elses life.
I have nothing more to say on the matter.

I have some dog tags with all the info on. 5 quid. The last line is 'Save the bike'.

Cheers NappiD (the rap version of Napoleon Dynamite), the only thing being I really don't like things around my neck so it would ideally need to go on my wrist.

An alternative is your driving licence and a contact card with ICE details on.

I just think the Road IDs are too expensive!

I also have dog tags from www.dog-tags.co.uk. They've got my name and a list of phone numbers so the paramedics or docs should be able to get in touch with someone who can give them information or make decisions. I leave one tag in my seat pack all the time.

I personally wear an SOS Talisman - it contains a folded strip of paper that has all your basic medical details [blood type/allergies/etc] (assuming you will it in) and emergency phone numbers...

My family have always worn these since my brother was diagnosed with Crohns Disease, requiring him to keep details of his medications/etc on him at all times.[/url]
Already signed up for the following 2010 rides:

    Etape Caledonia (May 16th)
    AMR's Trossachs Ton (June 20th)
    AMR's Cross-Border Sportive (Sept 19th)

  • I found id wristbands from http://www.mysportidband.com . Looked at the roadid but I wanted something from the UK and I want to be able to change my address etc. without all the hassle. Never quite fancied dog-tags either.

Ordered yesterday and it arrived today. Too many close calls in the Peak District to go out without some form of id!! Seem to have some fans on tritalk.co.uk as well.
  • Cheers Mark. :D

These things are cheap and are big enough to roll up your own slip of paper with whatever you want on it, especially if you use a printer rather than freehand. They also have a small plastic container inside for pills but they won't hold many. Bung one on your keyring or on a zip pull or whatever. I bought a six pack so I've got 'em for skiing as well.

I may be a minority of one but that doesn't prevent me from being right.

    .

At the trust I work at all the computers have been restricted so only authorised hardware will work with them. This includes USB's.
If you want I'll ask in A&E on wed (when I'm back in) if they have a computer they could use incase someone came in with one. It's probably not something they may have thought about and the IT dept could probs make one pc able to accept them.
Bianchi. There are no alternatives only compromises!
I RIDE A KONA CADABRA -would you like to come and have a play with my magic link?
  • I can see the idea but how would a paramedic / police etc. know to look inside it? At least the id bands / tags are visible and say ID etc.
  • Dog tag for me too, just has my name and an emergency contact number on it. Always wear it on a lanyard round my neck inside clothing when running or cycling. I guess if things were that serious they would find it easily.

And very cheap, also carry one on my normal bunch of keys also.

    Hi there
Ive read your posts with interest here is another dog tag solution. Its similar to the u-tag offering but 5 pounds cheaper at £20

    http://www.mekey-icetag.co.uk

Its a new venture, but it looks like they will be doing wristbands and similar quite soon

I wear one of these when im out on the bike - it gives me peace of mind that if the worst happens, people will be contacted asap

Freaky, my RoadID says "save the bike first". 12 quid isn't too bad, they are decent quality.

  • Hello,

I agree that the Road IDs look great but are not available in the UK yet.

    How about trying these:

    http://www.pledgetodoit.com/

They are meant for motivational messages but you could put an emergency name/number on them

Those helmet stickers look like a good idea, I'd never thought of carrying a tag of some sort.

    Makes sense to me 8)

Sticker inside my helmet with details on, plus ICE contact in mobile - can't see the need to pay for tags
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

Paramedics would have to remove your helmet, and search for your mobile. So they would get your details when you got to hospital at the latest. But at the road side they might not want to turn you over to find your phone or want to remove your helmet.

I have drug allergies so that is my main reason for wearing my roadID, that and my family can be contacted to agree to organ donation and more importantly come and pick up my bike :D
