what have you got, used or can recommend for road use?

    makes a big visable bike, it's also has enought light for pottering though the darker parks which is about as dark as urban can do.

  • I used to use this kind of light all the time, but the stowage of the battery on the frame somewhere (bottle cage usually) and the charging regime got the better of me in the end and I went back to battery LEDs which I've found fine for urban commuting.

    I don't know what batteries this light set takes, but I wouldn't get it if they're Ni-Cads. There's a long charging time and you have to religiously discharge/charge them to prolong the battery life.
  • Got a set Electron 5w/10w, were fairly popular a few years back, bit of change from 60 squids after a very quick bike shop hunt (where I bought mine from for ~50, back before the bike price hike)...

    But more recently, the Fenix L2D and LD20 were raved about, in fact not long after I bought my Electron set. Their prices have a gone up a bit, but still a great output for the pennies...

    This is my fairly new setup:

    You can't tell from my slightly dodgy photo but that's two Fenix L2Ds on the bars. Also a Knog Gecko on each fork and a Blackburn Mars 4 at the back.

    The Fenixes throw a lot of light forwards but very little sideways, which isn't very good for being seen on the road - hence the Knogs which "glow" and have masses of side spill. If I was only going to be doing urban commuting on lit roads I would probably use only one of the Fenixes as I can't imagine you'd need much "see where you are going" light.

    All run on rechargable NiMH cells (2xAA in the Fenixes and 2xAAA in everything else) which are cheap as chips and very lightweight so easy to carry a spare set.

    What you need depends on whether you are riding unlit roads or not so need to see or just be seen.

    I'll second the recommendation for Ay-Ups. Been using a set for the past 2 years now and they're fantastic.

    Mail-order from Aus, packaging looks bomb proof so should be ok. I'm gonna buy some.
