Trek 1.5 frame versus 2.1/2.3 frame?

Hi all,

I recently purchased the 2009 Trek 1.5 and immediately upgraded the front derailleur to Tiagra and the rear to Ultegra (at a very minimal cost), and the crank was changed to a Bontrager Select compact double (at no cost). With those changes in place, is the bike now close in value to the Trek 2.1 or 2.3?

Here are the specs for the 1.5:

The 2.1:

And the 2.3:

With financial constraints in mind, I purchased the 1.5 with the thinking that the frame was upgradable and one I could grow with (or until I can afford a Madone years from now).

After purchasing the 1.5, I started to think that maybe I should have purchased the 2.1 instead because the frame seems slightly better. But is it? The only difference is the carbon seatstays. Do they really increase the value of the frame all that much?

For what it is worth, I ride about 100 to 200 miles per week, recently completed my first century and am hoping to maybe compete in a stage race or two in the next year, and maybe a double century.

Thanks,

-Christian

I have the 1.5 and love it, again I changed the wheels to campag and seatpost (FSA Carbon job) and San Marco saddle.

Only other thing im going to change ATM is the front mech to 105/Ultega as fairly cheap upgrade

Thanks for the reply. How much did the carbon seatpost cost you? How did you know what size to buy? I see quite a few cheap carbon seatposts on Ebay but I can't tell if they would fit. I ride the 58cm 1.5.

I definitely plan to upgrade the wheel set when I get the money, and the tires as well.

    Thanks again,

Got it for about £25 from Planet X as they were having a super sale. its £70 on CRC.

Wheels made a big difference simply as they were over 1kg lighter than the stock ones.

wheels will make more of a difference than the carbon seatstays - think about upgrading the wheels and as has been said above - change the bits that make you comfy - with the focus on making them comfy, not necessarily "lighter" - so saddle, bars, seatpost etc.
  • Thanks for the replies. I think after a tire and wheel upgrade, this bike should be good for a long time.
