lightweight fork options and current deals

OK, I'm going to put a proper fork on the Tranny. The Nuke proof rigid is all very well and good, super light and looks great but it's holding the frame back. This bike, I think, could do just about anything but I'm constantly holding back especially on fast rocky/rooty downhills and small jumpies as I'm worried about overstressing the fork and ending up eating trail. OK, perhaps I'm holding the frame back then, but as I can't replace the rider, I'm replacing the fork.

So, Ibis reccomend a 100mm fork with 10mm sag, which is wierd. I was thinking of fitting a 120/130 and setting the sag correctly (25-30%) which should give a similar A2C but I'm actually pretty happy with the geometry offered up by the Nuke proof, which is 440mm A2C, equal to a DT Swiss 100 XMC at 20-25% sag so I'm prolly just going to put 100mm on

To fork choices. As I see them they are;
  • RS Sid Team (WC seems to be more money fro the same fork)
  • DT Swiss XMC100 (XRC is lighter but 28mm stantions which I suppose will be wobbly, just like old SIDs)
  • Fox F100
  • Magura Durin SL

I've checked my usual haunts and the best deal seems to be on the SID Team, which I found for 370 GBP.

However, I love the look of the DT Swiss and it's IS mount (my brakes are direct IS mount XTRs) and they get good reports, but it's not very rational as the cheapest I can find one is 500+ GBP (actually I found a 130 for <500 Euros but I think it'll be too long...)

Questions then;

- anyone got a line on a fork deal? Looking for light but not wobbly
- any other fork ideas?

    They are 295 at CRC, but as usual their hideously useless website is failing to load.

    hmm, yeah. Must admit to being put off by rumours of alfa romeo level unreliability from manitou (and I own an Alfa, so I know the pain :wink: )

    are they really stiff enough (ie, not wobbly XC whippet like old SIDS)?

    I have a Skarab - not too bad, so these should be stiffer with 30mm stanchions.

    Still think the SID is the way to go...

    yeah, I think you're right about that

    bugger, wanted carbon lovliness but my builtin pikey natuire can't justify the difference when the SID is probably the better (and lighter) fork. :roll:
