New chainset & BB - Do I need a new chain and cassette?

Hi everyone,

I have just bought a new Deore chainset, which I haven't installed yet.

However a friend as told me that I need a new chain and cassette! is this true?

I'm guessing it more to do with a clean start than a compatability issue, as they are currently Deore too.

Thanks

Unlikely you'd need to change the chain or cassette after a chainset replacement

Does he work in a bike shop?

Unless the cassette/chain are completely shafted they will work OK. You may find shifting is a little bit below par to begin with but the drivetrain will soon bed in.

Edit: bit confused by the thread title - did you buy a BB or a chainset?

Sorry .blitz, yes I have bought a SLX which as the bb included.
Funnily enough the friend did work in a bike shop! maybe old habit die hard.

Thanks for the advice, didn't want to shell out another £30+.

    Thanks

Unless the chain is fairly new, I'd get a new one. Old chains quickly wear down new chainsets.
