A driver, now identified as an Asheville firefighter, shot a bicycle rider because he was angry the man was riding with his child on a busy road, Asheville police said.

Seeeeeee, you should ALWAYS wear a helmet!

(Did make me wince at first when I read he'd been shot in the helmet)

If I cycled in the US I'd wear full body armour (armor?). 8)

Sounds like a few of the posters on here. You sure it wasn't because the cyclist wasn't wearing a helmet?

Diez pulled a gun and opened fire, hitting the victim in his bicycle helmet, according to police.

They said the bullet penetrated the outer lining of the helmet but did not actually hit the victim's head.

Police arrested Diez and charged him with attempted first degree murder.

So, in order to make the child more safe, he shot the main rider

Never really thought that one through now, did he
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

I'm guessing the wife witnessed this. Plus, if it was a busy road, then I'm guessing quite a few people did.
I'd like to see how many people would be on full pay over here in the same situation!

He's not in jail being punished - he's being held until he can be tried.

i thought it was quite progressive. A good idea. Too many people in this country end up homeless and jobless just becasue they are held on remand for something that they are eventually found not guilty for.

You end up punishing innocent people. Why would you want to do that?

I've just re-read the article - there's nothing about him being in jail - just awaiting trial.

I'm guessing that the Fire Dept can't sack him for something that's not at all to do with work, or come to trial yet.

It's the court's job to try him. If he goes to jail, he'll lose his job. If he doesn't go to jail I suspect it'll be becasue he has mental health issues, either way I reckon his career's over as a fire-fighter.

Load of B/S about being upset about being concerned for a childs welfare.

Clearly he's hoping his excuse will fall favourably with the judge ...... being the US, it might :?

    It's better than saying I shot him cos I'm a f****** nutter .
