What's the first bike-relating thing you'd buy for £50?

Seeing as I'm about to receive a voucher... What'd you get? Let's assume you already have enough fairly average/cheapo equipment that you are not wanting for anything in particular.

    Carbon bottle cage?

Seriously though, have you got bike computer? if not then that would be worthwhile.

Personally it's a helmet, I've just realised recently that I really should have one, especially as I'm planning longer rides in areas I don't know so well (not that knowing the area helps if you get hit by a car!).

If you don't have any, I'd probably say an entry-level set of SPDs, but then you'd need the shoes as well, which would take you over 50 quid.

I'd go for a baselayer or two. Can't have enough good baselayers.

Happy with my helmet, and my SPD pedals and shoes, and computer (bought a cheapo one after my good one bounced off never to be seen again). Good choices though!

Hrmm baselayer. I tend to get very hot and sweaty anyway, so I wear a fairly wicky jersey without any extra layers under or over it. Would it help me to have an extra base layer?

If I were you Sara, more bibshorts!
  • SPD Sandals you'll need to add a couple of quid

Hahah, SPD sandals are almost tempting...
...I suppose I could go on the hunt for lady-bibshorts locally... I know you wear some men's ones, but I'm not sure how they /should/ fit so I couldn't put on mens ones and know it's "good enough" a fit...

I only wear ladies' ones. Men's ones don't fit right...

And I love my SPD sandals. They rock.

    Workstand or Tool set.

track pump is a most have if you don't already have one.

waterproof/windproof gears, since it will be discounted during the summer

Got a track pump, albeit a cheap one from Tesco, but it works well when I have enough power to push down hard enough!

Got workstand, got sets of tools coming out of my ears.

And I only boil to death in waterproof stuff - I have a good jacket but don't need much else - though I suppose I could look at tights for the winter. Hrm.

Oooh, Brooks saddle. Tempting, but my Ladle is doing well...

If you'd normally spend £20 on, say, a jersey, put the voucher towards it and buy yourself a nice £70 high-end item.

sarajoy, i just remember your thread not longer ago regarding a bike from Gumtree. use the £50 to upgrade components for that bike if you have got it?

    how about cycling glasses?

£50 can be spent on one of the following

    better LOCK
    better Lights
    Rain Jacket
    tyres
Little tool bag thing to fit under seat plus inner tube or two
    a show off cycling bag

or a second hand childs BMX so you can ride around a pretend to be a giant.

Actually, windscreens are already designed on the assumption that people will be going head first through them without a helmet, although most are expected to go from the inside to the outside of the car.

American windscreens, with laminated glass, had to be redesigned, when it was found that the plastic layer was too good. Heads successfully went through the windscreen, but the plastic layer didn't tear, it just stretched. It then sprung back, guillotining the driver.

But they went back to the drawing board

A pair of waterproof overshoes, you should have £25 left for a drink or two...

But that adds to the excitement of pumping up your tyres! Keeps you on your toes as you have to "feel" for the pump fecking about! Then it's a case of gently letting it out before removing it from the valve, without snapping anything

Clothing gets my vote personally although with £50 to spend I'd be tempted by a better track pump and put the change towards some new clothing......
