Charlotteville Cycling Club along with joint lead sponsors 'Cycleworks' and 'Churchouse Financial Planning' are pleased to announce that the 2009 edition of the Guildford Town Centre Races will take place on Wednesday 8th July. The event was looking in doubt at one stage until we were able to secure the support from the aforementioned sponsors but we are now looking forward to the event in its traditional format on the cobbles of Guildford with the usual three events [Youths, 3/Jun and E/1/2].

Further details can be found on the Charlotteville CC website:
http://www.charlottevillecc.org.uk/inde ... &Itemid=75

There is also a link on this page to the full entry details from the British Cycling website. You won't however find the details in the BC printed calendar as the registration of the event came after publication.

Looking forward to seeing you all again (I hope) at the event and we'll try and arrange better weather this year.

Its been running now for twenty five years but earlier in the year it looked as if the Guildford Town Centre Races would not take place. However, with the support of the local business community the event was secured for another year. With the help of the Town Centre Managament Group and the Guildford Summer Festival Committee and publicity from both 96.4 The Eagle and Surrey Advertiser the sponsors were found.

The event is promoted by Charlotteville Cycling Club in partnership with co-headline sponsors Churchouse Financial Planning and Cycleworks UK Ltd. Racing takes place on Wednesday 8th July on its traditional course at the centre of Guildford taking in the cobbles of the High Street, the long sweeping descent into North Street and the tight corner up into Market Street. Churchouse Financial Planning are Independent Financial Advisers and Chartered Financial Planners and are a local Guildford High Street based business. Cycleworks are one of the South’s leading cycle shops with premises in amongst other places Burpham catering for all your cycling requirements.

Entries for all events are coming in fast with some hard racing expected for what is widely regarded as one of the toughest criterium events in the south. Amongst the top riders entered for the main event of the evening there are several names that will be familiar to regular attendees of the event will recognise. Two time winner Warrick Spence (CycleFit RT) returns to try for his third crown but there will be many other riders out to try and stop him from again winning the event which always seems to play to his racing strengths. Regular entrant Jody Crawforth (Arctic Premier RT) comes to this years event as the reigning National Cyclo-Cross Champion having taken the title back at the start of the year. Wouter Sybrandy (Sigma Sport/Specialized/Sportful) will be in good form after being outsprinted by just a matter of inches in the final Tour Series national criterium series event at Southend-on-Sea. That particular event was shown on ITV4 last Friday and was part of the same series that saw an event take place in Woking earlier in May. James Stewart (Team Kinesis UK) came third in the Abergavenny Criterium which was a support event to the National Road Race Championships held last weekend in Wales. Finally, James Millard (Madison.co.uk) will once again return to his family home town of Guildford where ‘Milly’ will want to take the big title at the local race that he attended (and raced in) many times whilst he was growing up.

As usual there will be a full programme of support races where the leading entrants for the 3rd’s and Juniors event, which will almost certainly have a full field come race day, include the race winners from the past two years; Sam Sturgeon (Team Terminator) and Paul Hopkins (OffCamber), who return to the event for 2009. The Youths event finishes completes the list of races and will have some of most rewarding and interesting racing from under 16 riders all the way down to the under 10’s.

Charlotteville Cycling Club would like to thank all those who have helped in order to gain sponsorship for this event and subsequently ensuring its survival. Ofcourse we would particularly like to thank our headline sponsors Churchouse Financial Planning and Cycleworks UK Ltd as well as Knight Frank and Surrey Advertiser for their continued support.

After the heavy rains that caused the cancellations of the youth event last year organisers are hoping for better luck this year and have arranged for a dry evening!

    Guildford Town Centre Races 2009
    Promoted by Charlotteville Cycling Club
Presented by Churchouse Financial Planning and Cycleworks UK Ltd

Following the heavy rain that caused a washout of last years event, this year the Guildford Town Centre Races saw dry and breezy conditions that drew record crowds and record entry levels to Guildford on Wednesday night. Pre race entries had promised some tight racing and they certainly lived up to expectations. The first race of the night saw a full field of 3rd category racers take in the circuit which covers a small circuit taking in the smooth tarmac section of North Street, the bricks of Market Street and finally the uphill cobbles of the High Street and as is always the case it didn’t take many laps for the field to be blown to pieces and different groupings making their way around the course. Hugo Humphreys (Lee Valley Youth CC) took the honours after a very close finish when he just managed to outsprint two former winners of the same event from previous years, namely Sam Sturgeon (Team Terminator) and Paul Hopkins (OffCamber) with Jon Lewis from host club Charlotteville Cycling Club coming in just behind in fourth position. Humphreys gave away many years of experience to the other riders but certainly made up for it in strength and skill to win the race and in fact was a late entry having only decided earlier that afternoon to make the trip down from London for the event but was very pleased that he did.

The Youth Races don’t usually have many advance entries, as was the case again this year, however the good weather meant that 30 riders turned up on the start line for a series of races within the race covering five different age categories ranging from under 16’s down to under 8’s. Jim Lewis (Glendene CC/BikeTrax) led the field home from the Fit-For duo of Patrick Scarboro and Dante Carpenter.

By the time the E12 race started crowds were lining the barriers for the full length of the High Street and in the finish area they were two or three deep with spectators using all possible vantage points to get a good view of the racing. A top field of riders from across the region were present along with many more who had ventured from further afield including some who had returned from racing on the continent. It did not take long for the field to begin to break up with Warrick Spence (Cyclefit RT) , James Millard (Madison.co.uk), Peter Dibben (Hargroves Cycles) and Wouter Sybrandy (Sigma Sport RT) putting in some big turns on the front. Eventually the lead group was down to half a dozen riders who managed to lap the entire field which caused the commissaries to bring the lapped riders race to a premature end with them sprinting for places five laps from the end which left the remaining group to do battle for the title. As they came into the final lap it was Spence and Millard who were neck and neck as they headed up the final climb of the High Street towards the line, each on separate sides of the road with Spence just taking the win on the line for what was his third title on the Guildford cobbles.

The event organisers, Charlotteville Cycling Club, would like to thank all their sponsors, officials and helpers for making the event such a success and look forward to its continued and growing success in the coming years. One item of particular note is that both main sponsors, Churchouse Financial Planning and Cycleworks UK Ltd have confirmed their continued support to the event for 2010 which will mean that next years planning can begin now in order to make next years event even better.
