Old fashioned cycling shoes

Hi, I've recently gone back to pedals with toeclips after finding that I really don't get on with SPD/cleats.

What I want to know is, does anybody still sell 'old fashioned' cycling shoes, the black leather style with 'normal' soles that riders used to wear with toeclips and straps?

They also look good in a 'retro' kind of way too.......

Hi, try Dromarti. Their Race and Storica models can be used with clips and straps. They are around 150 quid though.

They're gorgeous! Maybe you could buy one of those Savill Row cycling suits that they have desiged to go with them - is it Rapha that have announced a 'suit'??

If you're looking for performance from your shoes, I'd seriously consider a retro-looking modern shoe - IME old shoes are seriously flexy in comparison to modern shoes and the uppers aren't anything as supportive - slipper-like Duegis might be light and comfortable but hurt like hell after a couple of hours cranked up under a toe strap - or maybe i'm just going soft as i get older?

Thanks all, the information is appreciated. I have ordered a pair of general purpose shoes that can also be used for commuting etc, from wiggle: they have a rigid sole and can accommodate cleats.

They have the old fashioned look, but with modern build....will let you know how I get on with them.

On my blog (link below) i'm compiling a list of 'traditional' shoe/clothing suppliers, please feel free to leave a comment if you have any new ones!

Oh, I also picked up a rather nice pair of toe clips/leather straps from velosolo - so my regression into old-fashioned-ness is almost complete!

OK, those might not appeal to some.

Instead of repros in hideous colours, modern shoes pretending to be old style, here are the real things from some of my stash:

And FFS what are "fixed" cycling shoes! Marketeers seem to think they can sell anything to hipsters and wannabees by adding the magic words "fixie", "track". "messenger", "NJS" etc etc.
