105 triple; replace middle chainring

I cycle in what would be termed gently undulating countryside, and estimate I spend 90% of my time on the middle chainring (but I'm still happy with my triple). Being an all year round bike I anticipate this alu chainring will wear much faster than anything else. Am I right in thinking that replacing it will involve removing the non drive side crank and then the chainset from the bb?

Would I be able to replace it with a steel ring?

You can remove all the rings without removing the crank. Just undo the chainring bolts then pass the rings over the crank.

Marvellous! (I did wonder about that, but stupidly imagined trying to get the middle ring over the big one still attached. Doh!)

And forget the steel ring idea; the alloy ones aren't that expensive.
