The headset on my 2007 Spesh Stumpy (HT) is getting a bit sticky. Tried cleaning it but no joy. Do I need another one or can they be freed up?

If I do replace it it will HAVE to be a smoked grey Hope...

Might just be able to put new bearings in.

Depends on the headset though doesnt it? i'm fairly sure I read that my sealed Pig Pro can't be opened up?

It's just a pretty standard "Cane Creek" one I think - came with the bike. There's gunk oozing from the back of the lower end of it.

Should just be able to replace the carts really.
  • Its ok Matt Ill tell you what you want to hear...

Its shot you need a new one  Hope is the only way forward for the colour you want.

(Caveat: 95% sur eyou can service the Cane Creek ones but its best to keep it as a back up!)

    +1 to the above

Hope last for years with no phaffing, or CK but they're not so cheap.

Does sound like the bearings are shot so, what's it to be......

guilt free bearing replacement, or a new shiney Hope grey headset :wink:

new bearings is the right thing to do.

    however,

a nice new version hope headset is a joy to behold and you can tell the hope is properly well sealed with no routes in for any muck. it also has a split crown race which is the only way to go in my opinion.

ive had a chris king but it was too slack in my enduro and there is something about chris kings where they are made to the bottom end of the tolerances and the spesh headtubes are made to the top end of the tolerance meaning they dont achieve the correct interference fit. it wasnt a problem on my stumpy but it would push fit by hand into the enduro !!

also, the gunsmoke one is lush and is what i have on my stumpy too.

Yup, definitely a new headset

Remember, you have to tell your wife just how dangerous it is! You could *die* if it's faulty

And the only replacement that will fit is the Hope. And the only colour they have is a smoke grey one.

Hard life aint it  8)

Hi All, just reading the thread about the headset bearings. I have just had to remove my forks for a service and have noticed my bearings need replacing, i have a cane creek headset and supersonic has mentioned you can get replacement cartridge bearings for this, where would i get these and how do you know they are going to be correct size? any help would be great. cheers

thanks for the link. i have the cane creek slimstak which there is no mention on chain reaction. if it is a 1.1/8th bearing would it mean the more expensive the bearing the better quality or are they totally different bearings

Email CRC, they are really helpful and will look into it. I've asked them stuff many times and they always come back with an answer.

Stevie - will do. One of those things that I hadn't realised was so bad until I had it changed. I can now steer properly again!

And I have a very very black bike too...(this is pre new headset last week):
